Juror: Malcolm Warner, Art Historian and Curator Malcolm Warner is a British art historian who made his career in the American museum world. He was curator of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art; senior curator of paintings and sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art; senior curator and deputy director at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; and executive director at Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach. He curated exhibitions at those institutions as well as the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the National Portrait Gallery, London; the National Gallery, London; and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. He is an authority on Victorian art, especially the Pre-Raphaelites. He wrote his doctoral thesis on John Everett Millais (Courtauld Institute, 1985) and currently devotes most of his time to completing a catalogue raisonné of Millais’s works. We tagged along with Barra 18, one of the official supporter groups of SDFC, to catch an away game and learn firsthand what's got fans buzzing with excitement. Later, we sat with KPBS's Jacob Aere, producer of the digital mini-series “Soccer a la frontera” to talk about the history and culture of soccer in the region and putting this 5-part series together. Ken Marino and David Wain met at NYU in 1988 where they co-founded the legendary sketch comedy group THE STATE. They stayed friends and collaborators over the years, working together on movies like Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer, and Wanderlust and TV shows like Children’s Hospital, Medical Police, and of course The State. Ken also has acted in literally every television series, and currently stars on The Other Two (HBO) and Party Down (Starz). They are ALSO middle-aged dads and wannabe rockstars. So recently they got together with a group of other old friends (some dads, some not; some middle aged, some not) and started jamming, playing a diverse songbook of classic rock, pop, Motown, alt, New Orleans, favorites from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. When clips of these jam sessions went viral on social media, it led to some sold-out live shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
