Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” Now, you can see his journey unfold in the stage production of "Shrek the Musical." Carlsbad Community Theatre (CCT) is making the Broadway award-winning musical as the first show of their season. Shrek and his friends will call San Diego their new home – or swamp in the case of Shrek – July 25 - 27! Yes, your favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the DreamWorks Oscar®-winning, smash hit, animated film. It is a new kind of love emphasizing the importance of loving ourselves and one another. And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Making the Magic: The show brings three amazing talents together to this incredible production. "Shrek" is directed by Mark Scott, who is noted to have directed over 100 productions and came out of retirement to lead the "Shrek the Musical" team. A beloved drama professor at Rancho Buena Vista High School for over 30 years, Scott is celebrated for the quality of his productions and his lasting impact on thousands of students. His work has earned top honors from state and regional theatre organizations and was inducted into the California Educational Theatre Hall of Fame. Another notable head of the "Shrek" creative team is choreographer Dewey Decking, a highly sought-after talent in San Diego and beyond. He grew up performing in regional theatres across San Diego County, including Moonlight Amphitheatre and Carlsbad Community Theatre. Dewey trained at Dance Arts and later majored in Musical Theatre with a minor in Dance at the Boston Conservatory. One interesting note – Dewey’s grandfather was Carlsbad’s first mayor and namesake of the local airport. The music director for "Shrek" is the notable Lyndon Pugeda, recently honored for his work at La Jolla Playhouse on The Ballad of Johnny and Juliet. Widely respected across Southern California, his credits include The Old Globe, Moonlight Stage Productions, and Riverside City College. Pugeda has earned multiple honors, including a Craig Noel Award nomination and three National Youth Arts Awards. The main stars in the Carlsbad Community Theatre’s "Shrek" production include Shrek (Greg Bailey – from Temecula), Fiona (Kaylen Lash – from Carlsbad), Donkey (TJ Rodriguez – from Carlsbad) and Lord Farquaad (Brian Imoto – from El Cajon). There are 60 talented performers who make up the illustrious cast and hail from all parts of San Diego County as well as Temecula/Riverside County. They are comprised of adult and children/youth performers making up all your beloved characters as well as the fun Fairytale Creatures who you love from the DreamWorks Animation smash hit movie. The 48th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands, San Diego County’s largest high school marching band competition, is set for Saturday, Oct. 25 at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos. The tournament will showcase the music and artistic pageantry of 38 marching bands from across Southern California and will feature both parade and field show competitions. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school’s music program. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Carmel Music Foundation and will be used to support the school’s band, color guard and orchestra programs. Field show performances by small bands will start at 8 a.m. at Mt. Carmel’s Sundevil Stadium, followed by a free parade band review starting at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the school’s parking lot. Field shows with large bands will start at approximately 2:45 p.m. at Sundevil Stadium. Performances will conclude with special appearances by marching bands from San Diego State University and the United States Marine Corps. Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available throughout the day and evening. Tickets for stadium field shows and award ceremonies are $15 for students, seniors and military; $20 for adult general admission; and $35 for adult reserved. Tickets can be purchased either in advance or at the event. Stadium admission is free for kids age 5 and under. The school’s parking lot will not be available for public parking the day of the event, so spectators should park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Mt. Get ready to team up with your friends and MCASD educators in an awesome showdown for the fate of the museum–an art collision between Heroes and Monsters. Spend the week designing your own Hero and Monster inspired by the Museum's collection: Learn how to use art for good by developing your own art superpowers. Create a persona by dawning masks and capes influenced by Nick Cave. Use John Baldessari's conceptual powers to fight "Boring Art." Schedule Day 1: Start the week by imagining your superhero, or good-monster alter-ego, and its artful superpowers! Then, create your helmet. Day 2: Make your shield and cape and create dice to guide your way. In this 2.5-hour introductory workshop, students are provided with a wooden spoon blank to power carve. The instructor will cover safety, basic carving techniques, and spoon design fundamentals. Functional and decorative spoons are fun to use and display! The instructor will share her tips on achieving beautiful curves within a design. This workshop is designed to teach you how to safely craft your own spoon through power carving. Material fee: $5 payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop. This is an introductory workshop in Power Carving. Another intro class offered is Intro to Power Carving | Sculptural Art.
