On Friday, September 26, Songwriter Sanctuary will host three acclaimed artists performing in the round: Jordy Searcy, Gráinne Hunt ft. Jules Stewart, and Joe Summers. About the Artists Gráinne Hunt w/ Jules Stewart: Gráinne Hunt's reputation as a powerhouse performer has landed her on stages alongside U2 and Glen Hasard (who called her "The hardest working woman in Irish music") with opening slots for Gladys Knight and Mary Black. After showcasing at Folk Alliance International in 2024, she secured an 0-1 Visa to cement her presence stateside. She kicked off 2025 showcasing at Celtic Connections and is touring the US presently, before a showcase tour in Australia. She launches her new show "Queer Arrivals" at Liverpool Irish Festival in Oct 2025. She's joined tonight with tourmate and lifemate Jules Stewart, beloved touring and studio drummer known for her stellar work with groups like Billy Nation, Alex Bergan, Please Ask for Paul, Mariela, and more. Joe Summers: Joe Summers is a San Diego songwriter with roots in Folk, Blues, and Soul who mixes these styles to explore the emotions of loss, grief, and growth. He believes that music can help speak things that are hard to grasp with words alone, and that it can help realize our connection with the world around us. Jordy Searcy is an indie-pop singer-songwriter known for heartfelt lyrics, dynamic live performance, and intimate storytelling. Following early national attention from The Voice (season 7), he has released several albums and maintained a rigorous touring schedule, garnering more than 50 million streams and nearly 600,000 monthly Spotify listeners. Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” Now, you can see his journey unfold in the stage production of "Shrek the Musical." Carlsbad Community Theatre (CCT) is making the Broadway award-winning musical as the first show of their season. Shrek and his friends will call San Diego their new home – or swamp in the case of Shrek – July 25 - 27! Yes, your favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the DreamWorks Oscar®-winning, smash hit, animated film. It is a new kind of love emphasizing the importance of loving ourselves and one another. And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Making the Magic: The show brings three amazing talents together to this incredible production. "Shrek" is directed by Mark Scott, who is noted to have directed over 100 productions and came out of retirement to lead the "Shrek the Musical" team. A beloved drama professor at Rancho Buena Vista High School for over 30 years, Scott is celebrated for the quality of his productions and his lasting impact on thousands of students. His work has earned top honors from state and regional theatre organizations and was inducted into the California Educational Theatre Hall of Fame. Another notable head of the "Shrek" creative team is choreographer Dewey Decking, a highly sought-after talent in San Diego and beyond. He grew up performing in regional theatres across San Diego County, including Moonlight Amphitheatre and Carlsbad Community Theatre. Dewey trained at Dance Arts and later majored in Musical Theatre with a minor in Dance at the Boston Conservatory. One interesting note – Dewey’s grandfather was Carlsbad’s first mayor and namesake of the local airport. The music director for "Shrek" is the notable Lyndon Pugeda, recently honored for his work at La Jolla Playhouse on The Ballad of Johnny and Juliet. Widely respected across Southern California, his credits include The Old Globe, Moonlight Stage Productions, and Riverside City College. Pugeda has earned multiple honors, including a Craig Noel Award nomination and three National Youth Arts Awards. The main stars in the Carlsbad Community Theatre’s "Shrek" production include Shrek (Greg Bailey – from Temecula), Fiona (Kaylen Lash – from Carlsbad), Donkey (TJ Rodriguez – from Carlsbad) and Lord Farquaad (Brian Imoto – from El Cajon). There are 60 talented performers who make up the illustrious cast and hail from all parts of San Diego County as well as Temecula/Riverside County. We are excited to present the 2025–2026 season of the Athenaeum’s Barbara and William Karatz Chamber Music Series, which features artists who have established themselves as favorites with our audiences and those we enthusiastically welcome for the first time. Our season opens October 20 with cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, who wowed us a couple seasons ago with a solo recital and will return with pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion in an adventurous program of duos. The season also features two remarkable string quartets (longtime Athenaeum favorites, the Maxwell Quartet, on November 17 and gut string heroes, the Diderot Quartet) on April 14; star pianist Conor Hanick on March 16; early music experts, the Artifex Consort, on May 4; and two of our important teachers, violinist Andrés Cárdenes and cellist Steven Doane, joined by local favorite pianist Ines Irawati, on February 23. Putting these concerts together has been a true labor of love, and we can’t wait to welcome you back in October! Monday, October 20, 2025—Santiago Cañón-Valencia (cello) with Victor Santiago Asuncion (piano) Superstar cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia returns to open our season with a dreamy duo program of French sonatas, unique transcriptions, and Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne (adapted from his ballet Pulcinella). Cañón-Valencia is a BBC Next Generation Artist and Tchaikovsky Competition silver medalist; his skill is hailed by The Strad as “technically flawless … totally under the skin of the composers’ idioms.” Monday, November 17, 2025—Maxwell String Quartet A longtime favorite on the Athenaeum chamber music series, the Maxwell String Quartet returns with a colorful program that opens with their signature dose of Scottish folk tunes, followed by Edmund Finnis’s first quartet, a poetic work that draws inspiration from the choral music of William Byrd, which closes the first half in an arrangement by the Maxwell String Quartet. Brahms’s epic second quartet rounds out this exciting evening. Monday, February 23, 2026—Andrés Cárdenes (violin), Steven Doane (cello), Ines Irawati (piano) This special “lineage” program combines world-class performers and pedagogues in their debut performance as a trio, featuring romantic lyricism alongside playful folk melodies, culminating in Dvorak’s always riveting “Dumky” piano trio. Monday, March 16, 2026—Conor Hanick (piano) We eagerly welcome pianist Conor Hanick to the Athenaeum for the first time for an adventurous solo recital featuring Charles Ives’s monumental first sonata and two Schubert Impromptus paired with a new revision of Samuel Carl Adams’s Three Impromptus (a West Coast premiere) inspired by Schubert. Tuesday, April 14, 2026—Diderot String Quartet The Diderot String Quartet will make their Athenaeum debut with a journey to 18th century Vienna, featuring masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. One of the premiere ensembles performing on gut strings and historical instruments, this dynamic group (Adriane Post, violin; Johanna Novom, violin; Kyle Miller, viola; Paul Dwyer, cello) breathes new life into old works. Monday, May 4, 2026—Artifex Consort Specializing in the rich and varied “sound-world” of the late 17th century, the Artifex Consort (Malachai Komanoff Bandy, Rebecca Landell, and Eva Lymenstull, bass viols; John Lenti, theorbo; Ian Pritchard, keyboards) closes our season with works showcasing the viola da gamba as an ensemble instrument outside of the English consort tradition, during the height of its later flourishing in parts of England and Germany. The program features virtuosic music for two bass viols by Christopher Simpson and Johannes Schenck, alongside lush and ingenious—though little-known—works for three bass viols by Benjamin Hely and Johann Michael Nicolai. All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artists in the Sharon & Joel Labovitz Entry Hall. The Diderot String Quartet concert is generously sponsored by Sally and Einar Gall.
