In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called “scars” and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Ages 17+ are welcome.

About Seong-Jin Cho | Seong-Jin Cho was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won First Prize at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, and his career has rapidly ascended since. In January 2016, he signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. An artist high in demand, Cho works with the world’s most prestigious orchestras including Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, New York Philharmonic and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Conductors he regularly collaborates with include Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Simon Rattle, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Lahav Shani. Highlights of Seong-Jin Cho’s 2023–24 season include his anticipated debut at the Salzburger Festspiele with the Mozarteumorchester and Ivor Bolton, and his return to London’s BBC Proms with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Santtu-Matias Rouvali. He returns to the Concertgebouworkest, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Boston Symphony Orchestra, giving performances in both Boston and Carnegie Hall, and debuts with The Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. Cho also embarks on several international tours, including with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko in Korea, and with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons in Korea and Japan, and performs with the National Symphony Orchestra Washington and Gianandrea Noseda throughout Europe in Spring 2024. He also appears in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls including the main stage of Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berliner Philharmonie, Musikverein Wien, Konzerthaus Wien, Prinzregententheater München, Barbican London, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Walt Disney Hall Los Angeles, Festival International de piano de la Roque d’Anthéron, and Verbier Festival. Seong-Jin Cho’s latest recording is his solo album, The Handel Project, released in February 2023, and in August 2021, he released Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Scherzi with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda for Deutsche Grammophon. He had previously recorded his first album with the same orchestra and conductor featuring Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 as well as the Four Ballades. His solo album, The Wanderer, was released in May 2020 and features Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasy, Berg’s Piano Sonata op. 1 and Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor. A solo Debussy recital was also released in November 2017, followed by a Mozart album with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Yannick Nézet-Séguin in 2018. All albums have been released on the Yellow Label and have garnered critical acclaim worldwide. Born in 1994 in Seoul, Seong-Jin Cho started learning the piano at the age of six and gave his first public recital aged 11. In 2009, he became the youngest-ever winner of Japan’s Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. In 2011, he won Third Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at the age of 17. Serafin Paredes established Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego in 2001 with three main goals: To have a place where his students could further their musical knowledge, continue their education after high school, and connect with their culture through music. To help achieve these goals, in 2003 Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego became the first and only nonprofit mariachi in San Diego. Members of Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego are required to maintain a certain grade point average during high school to remain a member of the mariachi. To keep students motivated to continue their education after high school, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego gives members a small scholarship to help pay for their college expenses. Former and current members of Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego have continued their education at institutions such as San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, California State University Dominguez Hills, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, George Mason University, University of San Francisco, National University, and Stanford University to name a few. In 2003, Serafin Paredes attended the Tucson International Mariachi Conference, where he saw students interacting and learning from professional mariachi musicians through educational workshops. Being there inspired Paredes to create his own conference in San Diego. For the past 14 years, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego has being hosting an Annual Mariachi Conference in March, where students from San Diego and other parts of the United States and Mexico get together for two days and showcase their talent. The purpose of this event is to give students a space to master their skills, develop leadership skills, and mainly, to learn to respect the rich and living tradition of Mexican folklore. Throughout the years, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego has traveled and performed in cities including San Juan Capistrano, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Tucson, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Tijuana, Baja California, and Guadalajara. In 2018, the group had the privilege to travel to Japan and perform around Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo alongside the Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Sergio Caratachea, Javier Rodriguez, and Yoshi Oshima.

Simultaneously honoring the past, celebrating the present, and creating the future of mariachi music, Mariachi Herencia de México brings an unforgettable night of Mexican music and culture to The Conrad. Their bilingual repertoire blends genres like bolero, cumbia, tango, and swing with lyrics that speak of the Latino and immigrant identity. The group emerged in 2016 from a program in the Chicago Public Schools and has gone on to record five albums, with hits topping the Latin streaming charts. The historic tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the ever-evolving genre’s influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed the Mariachi Herencia de México. The energetic, virtuosic Latin GRAMMY-nominated group has issued chart-topping albums and performed across the North American continent. Nuestra Herencia, their 2017 debut album, topped the Latin streaming charts. 2018’s Herencia de la Tierra Mía was produced by celebrated industry veteran Javier Limón and charted atop all major streaming services. 2019’s Esencia topped industry charts, while a second volume issued in 2020 performed similarly. In 2022, Herederos appeared as the group were performing a wildly successful North American tour and has been nominated for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album at the Latin GRAMMYs! About La Marisoul | Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez is a Los Angeles-born singer and founding member of La Santa Cecilia, a GRAMMY-winning and multi–GRAMMY-nominated quartet comprised of Mexican American musicians. Their authentic bilingual repertoire blends music genres like the bolero, cumbia, tango, swing, among other genres with lyrics that speak of the Latinx and immigrant identity.
