The Poway Community Choir proudly announces its upcoming holiday concert, “Joy to the World,” taking place Sunday, December 7 at 6 p.m. at Del Norte High School’s Del Norte Theatre, located at 16601 Nighthawk Lane in San Diego. This festive program will fill the season with choral classics and holiday favorites, all led by the choir’s esteemed director, Brooke Yang. Poway Community Choir was established in 2015 under the direction of Nancy Gray as a part of the Poway Unified School District. She retired in 2023 and Brooke Yang replaced her as Director. The choir performs spring and winter concerts and traveled to Europe this past summer to perform in the 25th Annual International CANTUS MM Music & Culture Festival where they performed in Mirabel Gardens as well as at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Ms. Yang has been an active performer in California since 1997. She has appeared at major venues including Herbst Theatre and Davies Symphony Hall and has given numerous benefit concerts supporting pediatric cancer patients, families, and survivors of domestic violence. Ms. Yang earned her Master’s degree in voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is a current member of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She became director of the Poway Community Choir in 2024 and now brings her artistry and passion to the San Diego community. Concert tickets:

This Diwali, join us for a hands-on craft workshop where we will paint and decorate beautiful Jharokha-style candle holders using sustainable materials, led by Dipali Dewan of OTB Handmadecrafts. A Jharokha is a distinctive architectural feature of Indian palaces and havelis—an ornate overhanging window or balcony that allowed royalty to view festivities while remaining unseen. Beyond their practical use, Jharokhas became a symbol of beauty, artistry, and craftsmanship in Indian culture. Their intricate designs often featured arches, carvings, and vibrant colors, reflecting the grandeur of India’s architectural heritage. In this workshop, we will bring that same sense of tradition and artistry into our craft. Each participant will create their own candle holder inspired by the Jharokha design—perfect for celebrating the Festival of Lights. Whether you are new to Indian culture or simply enjoy exploring creative crafts, this workshop is a wonderful way to experience the spirit of Diwali while making something beautiful to take home. All materials will be provided. No prior art experience required—just bring your creativity! This program is for adults over the age of 18. Space is limited, registration is recommended. Experience a journey of solo flute pieces spanning different cultures and times with musician Pam Vliek Martchev. She will be featuring the flute, alto flute, and piccolo, as well as composers like Marin-Marais, Bozza, Karg-Elert, and more. Pam Vliek Martchev served as principal flute with the Boulder Philharmonic in Colorado for 10 seasons, and has been a guest principal flutist of the San Diego Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony, Reno Chamber Orchestra, California Chamber Orchestra, and Long Beach Opera. She has been featured on many chamber music series such as La Jolla Summerfest, Art of Elan, Jacaranda, Chamber Music Unbound in Mammoth, Blanco Performing Arts in Texas, the Tannahill Arts Festival in Scotland, Le Salon de Musique, Bruman at UCLA, Dilijan, and LACMA Sundays Live. She is currently a member of the woodwind quintet Presidio Winds. You may have heard her on movie soundtracks, CD recordings, television specials, and in the San Diego pit for broadway shows such as King and I, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and My Fair Lady. A native of Long Island, NY, she began attending the Manhattan School of Music pre-college program at age 12, and continued another four years for her Bachelor of Music - her primary teachers were Harold Jones and Linda Chesis. During her student years, she won prizes in many competitions, was a soloist with the Long Island and Massapequa Philharmonic, and was featured on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase. She has been a guest teacher at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC); University of Oregon, Eugene; University of Nevada, Reno; and Manhattan School of Music. Her students have auditioned successfully for conservatory degrees across the country, top prizes in national competitions including the NFA High School Soloist, the National Youth Orchestra, and CA All-Southern and All-State ensembles. She is a Haynes Artist, and is the flute professor at San Diego State University, Pt. Informed by her background in astrophysics, Melissa Walter’s mixed-media practice is deeply rooted in observation, research, and the translation of scientific concepts into abstract, minimalist works that investigate humanity’s place within the cosmos. Her process relies on conceptually informed mediums and techniques ranging from repetitive action and fine detail to digital renderings and sculptural abstractions. This focus on process is reflected in the work of Juan Cabrera, whose process involves manipulating found photographic source material to create works on paper depicting architectural dream spaces. Through his practice in watercolor and woodblock printmaking, he investigates emotional attachment to architectural interior space, layering disparate textures and images to reveal hidden tensions. Together, the work of these artists explores the nuances of memory as subjective experience, interrogating the possibility of objectivity and the limits of representation. A creative strategist and visual storyteller with 25 years of nonprofit leadership, Sarah has guided Outside The Lens from a grassroots organization into a recognized innovator in creative youth development and media literacy, partnering with institutions like The Getty Museum on Voice Out, a regional exhibition that amplifies the perspectives of young artists. Sarah’s leadership philosophy is simple: create conditions for others to thrive. Whether expanding programs like Media Makers—which serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—or securing catalyst funding for Balboa Park's Botanical Building during her tenure at Forever Balboa Park, she leads with curiosity and trust. She’s also the creative mind behind Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art and has presented at Public Lands Alliance and International Placemaking Week conferences. A Minnesota native with degrees in Journalism and Gender & Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sarah was recently named a 2025 San Diego Magazine Nonprofit Pioneer.
