Made, in director Marlon Riggs’ own words, to “shatter this nation’s brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference,” "Tongues Untied" is a bold and beautiful film centering the experiences of Black gay men and Black gay love and desire. In the 1990s, it met with a firestorm of controversy that reached all the way to the U.S. Congress. A radical act of representation, it has lost none of its life-affirming resonance. In 2022, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". San Francisco based film curator Cornelius Moore who appears in Tongues Untied will introduce the film virtually. The San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be in attendance and offer secular blessings. The History of Black Baseball in San Diego Presentation by Bill Swank The Negro League Baseball Museum’s exhibit “Breaking Barriers” is adjacent to the Baseball Research Center. Of the more than 50 panels included in the exhibit, two deal with San Diego’s Johnny Ritchey and his role in “breaking barriers.” The narrative in the Ritchey panels was written by Swank. While Ritchey’s role was notable, the history of Black baseball in San Diego started at the turn of the last century. Swank has written about the subject in several books that cover baseball history in San Diego from the 1870s through to the current Padres. No one knows the subject better. The program is sponsored by the San Diego Ted Williams Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Admission is free, and open to non-members. Ahead of Mother’s Day, a report is out that brings attention to the challenges faced by Black mothers in the workplace — from inadequate paid maternity leave to lactation barriers. Then, the San Diego County Vintners Association said its wine sales declined slightly in 2024. A local winery said there’s still growth to be had — a county ordinance has made it easier for smaller wineries to open up.

Back by popular demand, this powerful exhibition features returning and new POC artists exploring Black history, culture, family, and community through their work. The evening also features the unveiling of "Miss Mary," an upright piano transformed by artist BJ Lane into a vibrant celebration of the performing arts. Part of the Oceanside Public Piano Project by the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, "Miss Mary" will be accompanied by live music from pianist and OCAF VP Robert Parker.
