  • Noche de Gala is Corazon de Vida’s flagship fundraising event in San Diego, taking place on Saturday, November 11th, 2023, at the iconic U.S. Grant Hotel. This year’s soiree will boast a cinema-inspired theme of times past, Hollywood’s Golden Age, highlighting a time when films of the 1930’s-1960’s inspired everyone to dream big and wish upon a star. The evening is set to begin with a champagne greeting in the beautiful Bivouac Ballroom, featuring tastings of premium brand mezcal and wine, paired with period-informed live music. About Corazon de Vida Foundation (CDV) Since its founding in 1994, Corazon de Vida has been on a mission to end child abandonment by breaking the vicious cycle of poverty. We provide life-changing support to orphaned and abandoned children in Baja through a network of 10+ orphanages that provide a loving home to over 500 children. The orphanages we support are all located within a couple of hours from the Mexico/ San Diego border, giving us the ability to stay connected and aware of their most pressing needs. Support covers food, shelter, utilities, care, and education needs for K-12 students, as well as scholarships to university & trade school for teens that have aged out of the orphanage system.   • David has been KPBS' Investigations Editor since 2019. David has been practicing the art and craft of journalism for 25 years, always with an emphasis on investigative and explanatory news. He first came to San Diego in 2000 to join the San Diego Union-Tribune’s I-team. While at the UT, David produced award-winning stories on San Diego’s high rate of officer-involved shootings, corruption involving contractors in Iraq, and misuse of donor funds at the local Red Cross. In 2008, he joined Voice of San Diego, the pioneering local nonprofit news start-up, as a senior reporter and assistant editor. During his time there, David wrote and edited investigative pieces on San Diego City Hall, the local biotech industry, and charter school operators. He left VOSD in 2009 to help launch Voice of OC, an Orange County-based nonprofit newsroom. For eight years David supervised a team of staff writers and freelancers focused on investigating Orange County government and politics. Most recently, he’s worked at EdSource, a nonprofit newsroom focused on statewide issues in education. He produced an in-depth series on chronic absenteeism in rural school districts. Early in his career, David worked as an assistant producer for Dateline NBC. He earned a B.A. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
  • The San Diego Early Music Society is thrilled to welcome back the Belgium-based ensemble Vox Luminis, under the direction of Lionel Meunier, after their sensational San Diego debut in 2019. The ensemble will present a program of four early Bach cantatas: Actus tragicus (BWV 106), Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (BWV 131), Ach Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (BWV150), and Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (BWV 12). Specializing in German, Italian, and English repertoire from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the group is known for their exquisite and rigorous approach to this repertoire that has made their name “enough in itself to spark a tingle of anticipation” on album releases (Gramophone). “Vox Luminis’s squad of up to 15 voices sing with the utmost sincerity of expression” (David Vickers, Gramophone, 2023).
