Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. July 30 – Aug. 20 (4 weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio This course is for the beginner abstract painter or a refresher for the seasoned artist. This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. It’s equally important to familiarize yourself with the best practices for finding and approaching auditions, as well as the nuances between agents and managers—do you need both, or just one? Knowing the differences can significantly shape your path. Additionally, mastering the self-submission process involves being aware of do's and don'ts, along with grasping what a CD expects from your audition, whether it's live or self-submitted. After you've submitted your audition, knowing the next steps can be a game-changer, all while keeping in mind the broader business aspects of the entertainment industry. Instructor’s Bio: D. Candis Paule, CSA, is the owner of Candis Casting. Since 2003, she has been the premier San Diego casting director and has cast over 300 commercials and 400 episodes of TV. Along with many telenovellas for Fox’s My Network, she has been the primary or local casting director on a wide variety of pilots and features and has worked on print jobs, voice-over projects, and industrials. Ms. Paule currently sits on three non-profit boards and is also an Intimacy Coordinator, an award-winning actor, and a private coach.

Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Mondays, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 14 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee.
