Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Mondays, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 14 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. World Bee Day is held in recognition of the role bees play in sustaining a healthy ecosystem, ensuring our food supply and ultimately the future of humanity. The purpose of our event is to raise awareness of the vital importance of bees and all pollinators, the threats they face and actions every individual can take to protect them. The JFGM will be partnering with other Balboa Park and community organizations including the Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, SD Beekeeping Society, SD Youth Symphony, CA Native Plant Society, Hives for Heroes and other groups to showcase bees through exhibits, music, interactive demonstrations, microscopic observations, art and educational hands-on activities. This fun and purposeful community event will be held on Sunday, May 18, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Upper Garden area. Our guest stars will be live HONEY BEES! Explore natural dye color! Sunday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 2-hour workshop, explore eco-bundle dye, the art of infusing natural pigments onto fibers. Join fiber artist Jeanine Ertl and share in the ephemeral, mindful and magical beauty of this serendipitous dye process. You will learn about the gentle, fleeting nature of a diverse array of botanical and kitchen dyes while completing the process from start to finish—mordanting bundling, steaming and finishing. Each student will create two unique silk or cotton squares or scarves. Colors will shift and change before your eyes as you place natural dyestuffs, steam, unroll, and enjoy! And while bundles steam, we will talk about exploring the potential dyes in our homes, gardens and local area. Students are welcome to bring in their favorite flowers to explore using in your bundle. Each participant will leave with a booklet on the Eco-Bundle Dye process and two bundle dyed pieces. Ages 12+ years welcome, or 8+ years with an adult. If adult and child would like to make their own pieces, please purchase two spaces. Stretch Affect, known for their concierge physical therapy and movement optimization, is throwing a Grand Opening Fundraiser this Sunday May 18 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at their new 10,000-square-foot facility in Sorrento Mesa (9945 Pacific Heights Blvd, San Diego, CA 92121). The event aims to raise $50,000 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and will feature a Paralympian guest speaker, and a live auction boasting signed sports memorabilia, training packages, travel getaways, and more to further help propel fundraising efforts. The fundraiser will also include demonstrations of wheelchair tennis and racing, and hands-on access to state-of-the-art fitness and recovery technology—including DEXA scans, 3-D motion capture from Kinotek, and interactive showcases by Blazepod, Gibbons, Matrix, and Hyperice. Families can enjoy a kid-friendly zone with inflatables and games, while attendees can explore supercars from Fast Lane Drive, sample food from Glass Box, and receive water bottles from Fill-It-Forward to support clean water initiatives worldwide. In San Diego’s Valencia Park neighborhood, a painted staircase was a gathering place for the community. After floods, they were unusable. A recent cleanup only raises more questions.

In this intimate class of eight, students will engage in two 6-hour poses: female for the first two days and male for the following two. Regardless of drawing ability, participants will advance beyond quick sketches, learning a time-tested method for creating more finished figures and portraits. While six hours may seem short compared to traditional ateliers, it provides ample opportunities for Ken and Stephanie to introduce essential vocabulary and concepts that will significantly enhance your drawing skills beyond the typical 20-minute sessions of most sketch groups. During the first two days, you will learn from Ken, and on Days 3 and 4, from Stephanie. In this workshop, you'll learn to create an accurately angled, well-proportioned figure, transform it into volumetric forms like cylinders, cubes, and spheres, and then add the final touches that change an unfinished drawing into a polished art piece. Beginners will be encouraged to start their drawings on newsprint (using vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, and a kneaded eraser), and to then transfer their rough “starts” onto good quality white or toned paper to attain a more finished version in charcoal or graphite. Intermediate and advanced students are free to start in whatever way they prefer on any quality white or toned paper they are accustomed to, using any medium of their choice, such as pencil, charcoal, pan pastel, watercolor, acrylics, or oils. All levels are welcome, as instruction is individualized. Materials: You don’t need to purchase everything on this list. Only buy materials that are relevant to the medium with which you plan to work. If you’re more experienced, you may choose the medium of your preference. Beginners should start Day 1 with newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, and a kneaded eraser. Drawing pad: 18" x 24” smooth newsprint and a wood or foam core drawing board (one inch larger with four clips). Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal and Conte 3B charcoal pencil or your favorite brand. Graphite: 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils. Sharpener: Single edged razor blade or utility knife and rough sandpaper such as 90 grit. Erasers: Kneaded eraser and Tombow eraser. Blending stumps―large and small. Rags or Viva paper towels. Optional: Strathmore 400 series grey toned paper (24" x 18"); Pan Pastel in black and white; two triangle-shaped sponge applicators with extra sponges; one white, soft pastel.
