  • The holiday season can be especially tender when we are missing someone we love. This 2-hour interactive gathering offers gentle guidance, education, and ritual practices to help navigate grief during this time of year. Hosted by Wendy Kessler, Grief Guide, this is a time for us to come together and acknowledge that the holidays can present additional challenges for those who are grieving. Wendy will share practical ways to navigate the season and show us how knowledge, ritual and creativity can aid in the integration of grief. Together, we will: - Learn about the nature of grief and tools for navigating hard days - Explore the history and healing power of ritual - Create a personalized candle ritual scape to take home - Share in community conversation and connection The heart of our time will be the Five-Candle Ritual, a simple yet profound way to honor loved ones we miss. Each candle represents sorrow, courage, memories, love, and hope. Whether practiced in community or privately, this ritual can become a grounding tradition throughout the holidays and beyond. All supplies are included, and you’ll leave with a ritual candlescape, handouts, and practices you can return to at home. Feel free to bring-your-own special items that you'd like to include in your candlescape - a favorite container like a tray or basket, trinkets and mementos to personalize your creation. Come as you are, with your grief, your love, and your memories. Together, we’ll create space for light and hope. The Death Network: Website / Facebook / Instagram

  • Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O | Athenaeum Jazz Athenaeum Music & Arts Library 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037 Friday, December 5 7:30 p.m. *AT THE ATHENAEUM MUSIC & ARTS LIBRARY* The fall series concludes on Friday, December 5, with "Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O." Described as “An ambassador of good feeling” (New York Times), drummer Matt Wilson is one of the most in-demand musicians in jazz. He presents this joyous trio project celebrating the holiday season with his own characteristically humorous and at times eccentric sendups of holiday classics. The band, now in its 25th year, features sax virtuoso Jeff Lederer and bassist Paul Sikivie. Wilson’s greatest gift is his knack for invention and the unbridled sense of fun he brings to the bandstand—a perfect combination for the holiday season. As The New York Times remarked, “Wonder and innocence, gaudiness and cheer: can it be any surprise that the jazz drummer Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays?” Wilson’s last Athenaeum appearance was in 2020 with his Honey & Salt quintet celebrating the work of American poet Carl Sandburg, a project for which he received the Jazz Journalists Association’s designation as Jazz Artist of the Year. JazzTimes wrote, “There are a few more emphatically dazzling drummers working today, but almost nobody in Wilson’s peer group with a broader grasp of jazz or a more natural sense of time, or a stronger signature as a bandleader, or more goodwill among his fellow players.” Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Facebook / Instagram
