The VAPA Foundation, dedicated to enhancing access to arts education for San Diego students in grades K through 12, is thrilled to announce its annual Beyond Brilliance Gala, an extraordinary celebration that highlights the exceptional talents of young, gifted performing artists. Now in its sixth year, the event will take place at a stunning new venue, the state-of-the-art Epstein Family Amphitheater. This venue will provide the perfect setting for a captivating showcase of performances across a variety of artistic mediums, including dance, musical theater, mariachi, and a full award-winning student orchestra. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an exclusive VIP Champagne Reception, featuring a Broadway-style musical performance. At 6 p.m., all guests will join a welcome reception with delicious bites, cocktails, and a range of captivating musical performances. Enjoy intimate ensembles and full orchestra pieces, including performances by Mira Mesa High School Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble from Creative, Performing, and Media Arts Middle School, a Mariachi Ensemble from Bell Middle School, selections from Gypsy by Scripps Ranch High School, and student visual art displays from across San Diego. After the performances, the celebration will continue with dessert, coffee, and more music. Guests are encouraged to dress in colorful, creative attire to match the spirit of this vibrant evening. Beyond Brilliance is not only a showcase of the incredible artistic talents of student artists but also a vital fundraiser that supports the programs that make these creative opportunities possible. Join the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation as they trace the area's evolution—from its Wild West beginnings and waterfront vice to its Victorian revival and present-day status as a National Historic District. Discover the stories behind the brick sidewalks, gas lamps, and preserved buildings that now shape one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods. The Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation (GQHF) is dedicated to preserving the architecture, culture and history of the Gaslamp Quarter, a 16 ½-block area designated as an historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Through museum exhibits, tours, festivals and educational programs for children and adults, the GQHF opens a window to the past by depicting the historical development of downtown San Diego since 1850. The Foundation operates from the oldest standing residence in the Gaslamp Quarter, the Davis-Horton House Museum, a repository of artifacts, photos and archives that we preserve for residents and visitors from around the world to enjoy. Founded in 1981 as a nonprofit corporation and recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt entity, the Foundation is led by an active Board of Directors that provides vision and leadership, sets policy and oversees the organization’s financial health. A Museum on Wheels: The Office of Collecting & Design Hits the Road! The Office of Collecting & Design, an enchanting museum of lost and forgotten objects, is taking its beloved collection on tour! Known as a "nostalgia machine," this interactive traveling museum invites visitors to step inside a 42-foot wonderland of drawers, boxes, and cabinets filled with carefully curated curiosities. Guests can explore the space at their own pace or engage in hands-on experiences like a scavenger hunt or a flatlay photography session. Each stop on the tour features collaborations with local artists and creative spaces, ensuring a fresh and immersive experience in every city. The journey kicks off in San Diego with a special partnership between the Office and ArtReach San Diego. From April 17–19, the mobile museum will be open outside ArtReach’s Hillcrest studio, welcoming guests (adults only) during the nonprofit’s daily hours. Visitors can also enjoy Mini Visits during ArtReach’s 21+ Art Party on April 18 (tickets to the Art Party required), while families and young artists can participate in a specially designed workshop inside ArtReach’s studio on Saturday, April 19. The show opens Saturday, April 12 and marks the beginning of an ongoing artist residency program that will center emerging and underground creatives from San Diego and beyond. Fedella Lizeth is known for her emotionally raw, personal, and texturally rich work. Her upcoming exhibition is a visual meditation on healing, identity, and transformation—created through experimentation with softness, sculptural forms, and nontraditional materials. Her work speaks in layers: some fragile, some bold, all deeply human. This event also marks the public launch of Subcultura Curation, a community-powered arts initiative founded by curator Bucky Montero. Built from years of organizing in alternative art spaces across Barrio Logan, Subcultura exists to uplift bold, underrepresented voices through exhibitions, residencies, archives, and storytelling. The residency and exhibition take place inside Studio Culture, a new creative hub home to Cult Studios—a growing force in San Diego’s arts and design community.
