On Thursday, October 31, Halloween, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mission Valley, the open-air shopping center, invites children and their families to visit participating stores to collect Halloween candy (while supplies last). Each participating store will be marked so families know where to go. The Trick-or-Treat event is free of charge with no pre-registration required. Also taking place during the Trick-or-Treat event, Trinity Theatre, a local performing arts company, will host a 30-minute performance of “The Little Old Woman Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything” by Linda Williams from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage in the center’s AMC Court. The performance, designed for children ages 3 to 5, will be free of charge, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. The Hutchins Consort plays on the eight scaled violins designed and built by luthier Dr. Carleen Hutchins, whose research into the acoustic properties of string instruments resulted in an innovative process called free-plate tuning; a precise method of refining the top and back plates of a violin before it is assembled to bring it to peak acoustic performance.The fruits of her labor are the eight Hutchins violins, ranging in size from the 18.5-inch treble to the 7.2-foot contrabass. Like all violins, these instruments capture the emotional element of the music. But they have the additional advantage of being crafted as a complete set with the same harmonic DNA giving them the ability to produce a unique array of sounds that add a new dimension to the works they perform. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! November 16 & 17, 9-11:30 a.m. In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: Carving safety; Honing/sharpening; Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood; Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle; Carving out the handle; Sanding the spoon and handle; Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic). This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. 5 Tuesdays from 6 – 8 p.m. Sept 10, 17, 24, Oct 1 & 15 In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes and slips. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course while applying handmade stencils and layering techniques with colorful patterns as well textured colorful designs using the sgraffito technique. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. All materials provided.
