  • Join us for a lecture by Olivia Zen Joseph, curator of "Layered Narratives," developed during their time at Mingei as the Quilt Fellow. This talk explores how quilts from the era and firsthand accounts of Black American experiences reframe the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition — the United States’ first World’s Fair. While the Centennial aimed to celebrate national identity and innovation, the lecture sheds light on the overlooked contributions and voices of Black women and the Black community, expanding understanding of this historic event through stories too often left untold. Olivia Zen Joseph is a Program Coordinator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino and the curator of "Layered Narratives: Quilted Stories of Gender & Race at the 1876 Centennial." Drawn to interpretation, history, and storytelling, they are passionate about uncovering the complex meanings and histories embedded in art and objects. Olivia entered the museum field through an internship in Collections Management and Conservation at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Looking ahead, they plan to pursue a degree in Library and Information Science with the goal of becoming an archivist. Mingei International Museum on Facebook / Instagram

  • What: Join hundreds of firefighters, public safety officers, military personnel, and civilians in the region's only memorial stair-climb event. In tribute to the 403 fallen 9/11 heroes—343 FDNY, 23 NYPD, and 37 Port Authority—participants climb 110 flights of stairs, the same number as in the Twin Towers, each bearing the name of an Emergency Responder lost on that day. Set against the stunning waterfront backdrop of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, proud hosting sponsor, the event offers a moving space for reflection and remembrance. After the climb, participants are invited to recoup, recharge, and relax together at the resort, enjoying bites, beverages, and camaraderie. Why It Matters: This commemorative event brings together the community in remembrance, while raising funds for Fire Fighter Aid, a local 501(c)(3) supporting firefighters and families affected by line-of-duty injuries and tragedies. Register & Donate: Registration is open—participants of all ages are welcome, with pricing tiers and fundraising goals in place. Plus, volunteer opportunities are available to help make this moving event possible. San Diego 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Facebook

  • It has happened to all of us before. We walk into a family gathering and rather than saying hello, our child darts the other way and tries to hide behind us. This can make us feel self conscious. To make things trickier, the more we want our child to engage, the more they burrow into our legs. This is temperament at work. Temperament is a child’s inborn way of approaching the world — the “why” that explains the meaning of her behavior.
