The afternoon's activities include: - A guided walk which will highlight the resilience of the Tijuana Estuary as well as the incredible ecosystem services estuaries provide, such as mitigating climate change. The walk will also be a fantastic opportunity to observe the diverse plant communities and wildlife that depend on this protected wetland. - Interact with non-profit organizations who work on the Tijuana River pollution crisis in various capacities: as advocates, on restoration efforts, or to educate the public on the issue. - A panel discussion led by WildCoast, Sierra Club San Diego, and San Diego Coastkeeper with nonprofit leaders and elected officials working together on a complex bi-national water pollution crisis. This pollution crisis is a culmination of infrastructure degradation, rapid urbanization, and multi-jurisdiction management challenges. In tribute to the 403 fallen 9/11 heroes—343 FDNY, 23 NYPD, and 37 Port Authority—participants climb 110 flights of stairs, the same number as in the Twin Towers, each bearing the name of an Emergency Responder lost on that day. Set against the stunning waterfront backdrop of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, proud hosting sponsor, the event offers a moving space for reflection and remembrance. After the climb, participants are invited to recoup, recharge, and relax together at the resort, enjoying bites, beverages, and camaraderie. The Ocean Conservancy and the California Coastal Commission partner with volunteer organizations, such as I Love A Clean San Diego to create the largest, international cleanup day. I Love A Clean San Diego leads the efforts for this day in San Diego County for the 41st year in a row. Data collected from this event feeds into the world’s largest database on marine debris. Join our efforts this year to be a part of this global event! This year, our countywide Coastal Cleanup Day will have around 100 + locations for volunteers to choose from, inland and coastal. Each site is hosted by a site captain (a specially trained volunteer) who will manage volunteers on site, properly dispose of the trash, and report back totals.
