Learn Plain Weave, Clasped Weft & Hemstitching! Sunday, October 26, from 2-5 p.m. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary. Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. There’s no better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Learn to make a Sweeper! Sunday, October 19, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn to make a long handled broom with traditional broomcorn. Taught by local artist-educator AB, the class is kept simple to minimize any difficulty in creating the sweeper broom. Be ready to be challenged with your craft skill. This will be a fun and interactive broom class that will take you into the creative culture of besoms. We will prepare the handle, attach the broomcorn, shape the broom head/bristles and stitch it together with needle and thread/cord. By the end of the class you will have a functional and artistic broom to take home with you. You’ll also have the opportunity to scent the broom as well as decorate the sweeper. It is helpful if you’ve already taken Hand Broom Making Workshop, but it’s not required. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended.
