The 2nd San Diego Hong Kong Film Festival features 4 movies from different eras. Boat People (1982) tells the story of life in Vietnam after the communist takeover which eventually led to numerous civilians fleeing the country by boat. Once Upon a Time in China (1991) is a classic action movie that explores how China responds towards the introduction of western civilization and values through the story of a kung fu master. Movies like All Shall Be Well and Once Upon a Time in HKDSE (both released in 2024) are examples of recent production aiming for the Hong Kong market (without access to mainland Chinese market) which greatly limits their budget. They tend to delve into local and non-mainstream topics like LGBT. Discussion sessions following Boat People and All Shall Be Well will be held at the venue.
