This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided. In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are highlighting distinct works by two artists, Jennifer Anne Bennett and Jeanne Dunn. In the gallery, their large-scale canvases envelop us with the omnipresent beauty of Nature. Bennett’s animated brushstrokes and sumptuous color-washes coax luminous landscapes into being. Inspired by the healing experience of Japanese "forest-baths" (shinrin-yoku), Dunn paints a sensual arboreal space using vibrant hues and quasi-representational forms. Choose from two upcoming dates: March 30, 2-4:30 p.m. -or- May 25, 2-4:30 p.m. Join Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. In partnership with UC San Diego Professor Steven Schick and Red Fish Blue Fish, the percussion ensemble presents the West Coast premiere of Douglas J. Cuomo’s "THE JUMP UP!", a site-specific piece directed by Mark DeChiazza, shaped to accommodate the specific topography and features of its location. All the musicians will move through the space during the piece, first offering the audience a wide panoramic perspective that gradually gathers towards the audience as the performance goes on. At the finale, the players merge into the audience, who will be invited to join into the musical fabric by clapping or vocalizing (as instructed on the fly by Sandbox Percussion) to form a single communal orchestra. Described as “exhilarating” by the New York Times, the Grammy-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion champions living composers through its unwavering dedication to contemporary chamber music. Composer Douglas J. Cuomo has composed for the concert, operatic and theatrical stage, a well as for television and film, including the themes for "Sex and The City" (HBO); "NOW" with Bill Moyers and Wide Angle (PBS); music for "Homicide: Life On The Street" (NBC).
