Zamrock, the Afro-rock genre that swept southern Africa in the 1970s, was born in the Copperbelt region of northern Zambia, and WITCH was at the center of it all. In the beginning, lead singer Emmanuel 'Jagari' Chanda and the band looked for a name to match edgy rock sounds coming from Europe and America. First they tried Kingston Market, which sounded too reggae-ish, then they tried Footswitch, but there was a local artist called Dr Footswitch, so they shortened it to Switch, and then finally WITCH. "The posters were handwritten," Jagari recalled, "so we would draw somebody on a broomstick." Hot out of the gate, WITCH signed to Teal Records and began touring in a truck with a canopy emblazoned with the words: "Trespassers will be eaten" The graphic artist who wrote those words also gave the band its enduring acronym: We Intend To Cause Havoc. Art Produce Gallery in North Park will host a special artist talk featuring the four San Diego-based African American visual artists currently showcased in the exhibition "Lineage + Inheritance." Curated by Kamaal Martin of Art, Power, Equity in partnership with UCSD’s Black Studies Project and Art Produce, "Lineage + Inheritance" presents a trans-generational dialogue between established artists Andrea Rushing and Jean Cornwell alongside emerging talents Mensah Bey and Domonique King. The exhibition, which opened March 13 and runs through April 19, 2025, features new works that frame particular generational perspectives on contemporary issues and the life and liberation of Black people. The artists work across diverse media: Rushing primarily with oil on canvas, Cornwell presenting hand-embellished acrylic prints on paper, Bey creating acrylic paintings oncanvas, and King exploring wood, metal, yarn and textiles. "This exhibition reflects a Black aesthetic grounded in community participation, artistic innovation, and liberation," says curator Kamaal Martin. "These concepts have been explored by artists, scholars, and activists throughout the long history of Black art practices in the Americas." Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran.
