This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided. In partnership with UC San Diego Professor Steven Schick and Red Fish Blue Fish, the percussion ensemble presents the West Coast premiere of Douglas J. Cuomo’s "THE JUMP UP!", a site-specific piece directed by Mark DeChiazza, shaped to accommodate the specific topography and features of its location. All the musicians will move through the space during the piece, first offering the audience a wide panoramic perspective that gradually gathers towards the audience as the performance goes on. At the finale, the players merge into the audience, who will be invited to join into the musical fabric by clapping or vocalizing (as instructed on the fly by Sandbox Percussion) to form a single communal orchestra. Described as “exhilarating” by the New York Times, the Grammy-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion champions living composers through its unwavering dedication to contemporary chamber music. Composer Douglas J. Cuomo has composed for the concert, operatic and theatrical stage, a well as for television and film, including the themes for "Sex and The City" (HBO); "NOW" with Bill Moyers and Wide Angle (PBS); music for "Homicide: Life On The Street" (NBC). In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are highlighting distinct works by two artists, Jennifer Anne Bennett and Jeanne Dunn. In the gallery, their large-scale canvases envelop us with the omnipresent beauty of Nature. Bennett’s animated brushstrokes and sumptuous color-washes coax luminous landscapes into being. Inspired by the healing experience of Japanese "forest-baths" (shinrin-yoku), Dunn paints a sensual arboreal space using vibrant hues and quasi-representational forms. Join master printer Sfona Pelah for a two-day etching workshop. Suitable for beginners to advanced, as well as printmakers who want time in the Print Room with support from an expert printmaker. Learn the basics of quadruped animal anatomy and how it can be translated into three-dimensional sculpture. We will talk about how the animal skeleton works, the basic muscle groups of locomotion, and the animal skull and features. Students will make their own sculpture by working from a cast sculpture of a dog. There will also be sessions with a live dog present. Join us for an inspiring evening with cellist Bennet Tsai and pianist Rodolfo Leone. Tsai is a First Prize winner at the 2023 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions (also receiving the Stern Young Artist Award) and earned Third Prize plus the Special Prize for Best Haydn Concerto at Berlin’s 2022 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann. Leone is the First Prize winner of the 2017 International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna, with additional top prizes at the Toronto and Busoni competitions.
