In partnership with UC San Diego Professor Steven Schick and Red Fish Blue Fish, the percussion ensemble presents the West Coast premiere of Douglas J. Cuomo’s "THE JUMP UP!", a site-specific piece directed by Mark DeChiazza, shaped to accommodate the specific topography and features of its location. All the musicians will move through the space during the piece, first offering the audience a wide panoramic perspective that gradually gathers towards the audience as the performance goes on. At the finale, the players merge into the audience, who will be invited to join into the musical fabric by clapping or vocalizing (as instructed on the fly by Sandbox Percussion) to form a single communal orchestra. Described as “exhilarating” by the New York Times, the Grammy-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion champions living composers through its unwavering dedication to contemporary chamber music. Composer Douglas J. Cuomo has composed for the concert, operatic and theatrical stage, a well as for television and film, including the themes for "Sex and The City" (HBO); "NOW" with Bill Moyers and Wide Angle (PBS); music for "Homicide: Life On The Street" (NBC). In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are highlighting distinct works by two artists, Jennifer Anne Bennett and Jeanne Dunn. In the gallery, their large-scale canvases envelop us with the omnipresent beauty of Nature. Bennett’s animated brushstrokes and sumptuous color-washes coax luminous landscapes into being. Inspired by the healing experience of Japanese "forest-baths" (shinrin-yoku), Dunn paints a sensual arboreal space using vibrant hues and quasi-representational forms. A house is more than a container for the things we spend a lifetime collecting, storing, arranging, and insuring. It is the repository of our memories, the life we spend there. We will make an accordion book with text and images of your home and/or family members or ancestors that reflect your perceptions, memories, family relations, and personal history. The structure of the pages will reflect the book’s subject, with openings that represent doors, windows, and the movement from room to room inside a house. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. In addition, you will want to bring room layout drawings, photographs, and/or black-and-white-on-paper printouts of your home or other drawings of the interior or exterior (sizes to be emailed once you have registered). Optional/recommended: 12” centering ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials for the pages and cover will be provided to create the books. If you do not have personal images or drawings, images relating to “house-ness” will be available for completing the book. Choose from two upcoming dates: March 30, 2-4:30 p.m. -or- May 25, 2-4:30 p.m. Join Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up.
