"Jump N Funk" is an immersive multimedia experience honoring the sonic legacy of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer and activist, Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti. This celebration captures the essence of Fela’s groundbreaking fusion of traditional Nigerian rhythms and American Funk, a sound that continues to resonate globally across generations. Since 2001, international DJ, producer, and scholar Rich Medina has served as the main conduit for connecting this rich Pan-African sound to dance floors worldwide. His passion and expertise have kept Fela’s legacy alive, bringing the Afrobeat movement into new cultural spaces. This San Diego debut is presented in partnership with Professor King Britt through his Blacktronika course at UC San Diego, which honors the contributions of innovators of color in electronic and dance music. This collaboration creates a powerful bridge between history, education, and dance floor energy, celebrating Fela’s enduring influence on global music culture. This eight-week workshop-style course builds on the introductory course and is recommended for students with prior screenprinting experience. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. This class will focus on digital image applications, transparency preparation, halftone methods, separations, and advanced registration techniques. A variety of mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will continue to explore how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. Children 8+ years welcome with adult.
