  • Kids explore cooking & crafts! Choose from the following dates: Mon-Fri, June 2 – 6 -or- July 7 – 11, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about cooking with farm-to-table ingredients and an equal mix of fun, traditional handmaking & crafting! Is your child curious about where their food comes from? Does your child love to make crafts? This summer, open their world to exploring the bounty of local, colorful ingredients and how those foods got from the ground to our plates with local culinary arts instructors from Sticky Fingers Cooking. Did your child know that carrots can improve your eyesight, and cherries can help improve your memory? Young chefs will also learn what makes certain ingredients super healthy for the body and how delicious they can taste, while practicing basic cooking skills and techniques on their way to becoming super chefs! When kids aren’t in the kitchen-classroom, they’ll be learning to craft using traditional materials with San Diego Craft Collective instructors with a variety of fun projects!   • Kids explore ceramics and woodworking! Mon through Fri | July 28 – Aug 1 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about ceramics & woodworking for kids! Kids learn woodworking hand tool techniques from woodworking professional, Steffanie Dotson. A mom, woodworker, furniture maker, and Executive Director at San Diego Craft Collective, she teaches woodworking to both children and adults year-round. With a focus on safety, Steffanie creatively mentors children and fosters confidence through woodworking. Kids will also explore ceramics with visual artist-educator, Lydia Kardos. Each camper will learn and practice ceramic hand building techniques to make fun, long-lasting projects in this traditional medium full of creative flexibility. This camp is for kids, ages 7-12 years. Projects and depth of learning are matched up to the children’s age/ability. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred from another camp, let us know! If your child is signed up for morning and afternoon camps here at The Maac at Liberty Station (the building San Diego Craft Collective is located in–Dorothy Laub Music & Arts Center), we’re here to provide that space for your them.   • Join us at ArtReach HQ for a "Stained Glass" Storytelling workshop! In this workshop, participants will create a colorful piece that tells a visual story.   • In this class, children will explore their favorite superhero themes while engaging in fun activities, like drawing, painting, and crafting their very own superhero costumes. By learning dance routines inspired by superhero powers, they will build coordination, strength, and confidence along the way. With a focus on creativity, self-expression, and teamwork, Superheroes: Art & Dance is a fantastic way for young kids to exercise their imagination and dance skills in the Athenaeum’s La Jolla Studio. Students will showcase their artwork and dance skills in a short performance on the final day of class.   • Rugs have a deep history as a textile art, but also as objects that create specific spaces. Using handheld tufting machines, participants can create and design their own rugs using colorful yarn. Learn how to create and translate a design for the medium as well as learn the basics of tufting and begin filling in your designs.   • Step back in time and discover the fascinating craft of flintknapping in this hands-on class! Flintknapping is the ancient technique of shaping stone into tools through the application of controlled force, a skill that has been used by humans for hundreds of thousands of years. In this class, you’ll learn the basics of flintknapping, including how to create cutting tools, points, and other useful implements by striking and shaping raw stone. Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll gain insight into the historical and cultural significance of flint tools and understand the precision involved in the process. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a survival skills aficionado, or simply curious about ancient craftsmanship, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with a time-honored tradition. You’ll leave with not only new skills but also a deeper appreciation for how early humans created the tools that helped shape civilization.   • Embark on a fun and creative journey into the world of photography! In this camp your little ones will use iPads to explore the basics of photography and stop-motion animation through engaging and hands-on activities. They’ll learn about elements of art such as shapes, color, and lines, perspective in photography (close up, worm’s eye) and elements of portraiture (expression) while using their creativity to capture the world around them through the lens of a camera.   • During our five-day art camp, we will have fun making art while learning about art from many places around the world. You will make your own Mexican piñata, paint a Chinese dragon, fold Japanese origami, paint a mythical Persian bird, paint an ancient Egyptian cat, create a San Diego collage, and draw and paint Australian tropical fish. We will use watercolor and acrylic paints, origami and decorative papers, tissue paper, crayons, markers, and pencils.
