Join Palomar College's Pride Center for a very special screening of the new documentary "Sally!" followed by an in-person conversation with the film's Co-Director Ondine Rarey! The screening will take place on Palomar College's San Marcos campus on March 20 at 5 p.m. FILM SYNOPSIS: "Sally!" (2024) Sally Gearhart was a charismatic trailblazer who led the charge in the 1970s and '80s lesbian feminist movement, leaving an indelible mark on women’s rights and LGBTQ+ equality. A brilliant and magnetic superstar, she inspired thousands with her unapologetic activism and visionary leadership. Yet, by 2008, her pivotal contributions had been all but forgotten, her legacy notably absent from the Hollywood film Milk. How could history overlook Sally Gearhart? This is the story of a revolutionary figure who cannot be erased. SPECIAL GUEST: Ondine Rarey Ondine is a filmmaker, editor, and writer. Her documentary FOOLS AND HEROES was a Grimme-Preis nominee (the German equivalent of an Emmy), airing on ARTE in France as well as stateside on PBS. KPBS has announced the release of a new podcast called “The Finest,” with episodes featuring stories about people, places and movements that make the San Diego region’s arts and culture scene unique. The first episode is available for listening on April 3.

Still-life painting is the study of everyday objects that take on a new life, tell a story and can act as a portal to another place or time. Emphasis in this class will be on an impressionist technique of painting using an alla prima (wet into wet) style of painting, keeping loose brushwork, thick paint, and eliminating detail. We will cover composition, color, form, and lighting. There will be a setup for each class along with photo images to create from. I do a painting demonstration in each class. One of our exercises will be a personal still life using objects that have meaning for us. The best part is that we will have fun as we share our discoveries together. Come join us! I cannot wait to see what you will create. This class is for all levels of painters, both beginning and experienced. You are also welcome to do your own work. Brushes: Bring a variety of brushes for your choice of paints that include #2, #4, #6, #8. Good quality brushes make a difference. Other materials: 12” x16” paper palette pad; odorless Turpenoid and linseed oil for oils; soft vine charcoal; 1.5- or 2-inch palette knife; paper towels; two small jars with lids; spray bottle for acrylic painters; sketchbook; color pencils; four canvas or canvas boards, 11” x 14” or your preference. Good quality watercolor paper for watercolor painters. Suggested items: Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal to keep paints moist; glass palette to go inside the box making paint easier to mix; Silicoil jar with spring in the bottom to clean brushes; two tall containers to hold clean and used brushes at your station in the studio. In this comprehensive class, students will learn the intricate art of staining porcelain and using colored clay to craft stunning patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces. The class will cover all aspects of the technique from coloring and preparing porcelain, learning how to build a variety of patterns and learning how to form and structure pieces. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate ceramic enthusiasts incorporating a selection of hand-building techniques as well as tips for wheel-throwing with the patterns. Set sail for an evening of raucous adventure and rollicking laughter as Grossmont College Theatre Arts presents "The Pirates of Penzance!" This timeless comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will sweep audiences off their feet with its infectious melodies, zany characters, and madcap wit. Directed and choreographed by Melissa Glasgow, with musical direction by Patrick Marion, "The Pirates of Penzance" will run March 20-27 at Grossmont College’s Performing & Visual Arts Center Stage. The production brings a fresh, dynamic energy to this beloved classic while honoring the rich tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp satire and high-spirited hijinks. "The Pirates of Penzance" follows the story of Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to a band of soft-hearted pirates. As he completes his term of service, he vows to dedicate himself to eradicating piracy—until a technicality binds him to the pirates indefinitely. Along the way, he encounters the beautiful Mabel, her eccentric father, Major-General Stanley, and a bumbling squad of police officers who are more charming than effective.
