Celebrated harpsichordist Jean Rondeau returns to San Diego, this time with his ensemble Nevermind, to present their brand-new transcription of the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, by Johann Sebastian Bach. With Anna Besson on flute, Louis Creac’h on violin, and Robin Pharo on viola da gamba, the ensemble worked extensively on the transcriptions, shining new light on Bach’s masterpiece and unveiling new possibilities within the music. The concert will be held at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church on March 14th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets and additional information are available on the society’s website. Founded in 2013, Nevermind champions and transcends the quartet repertoire (flute, violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord) of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Nevermind have showcased their virtuosity at prestigious venues across Europe including the Auditorium of the Louvre, Wiener Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall and the Barbican in London, Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Centra Nacional de Difusión Musical in Madrid, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Concertgebouw Brugge, and the Salle de Musique in la Chaux-de-Fonds. Six of San Diego’s most talented AAPI chefs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islander) will create signature baked goods for the Friendly Feast AAPI Chefs Bake Sale, taking place at Cowboy Star on Sunday, November 17. Guests can pre-order a curated box with six unique items, including an ube coconut crumb doughnut, Valrhona chocolate cannelé, “Flandan tart”, and more. Boxes are priced at $45 each. Proceeds benefit the Friendly Feast scholarship fund and Pacific Arts Movement. Bake sale boxes go on sale Thursday, November 7th via the Friendly Feast website. New Art Gallery Coming Spring 2025 The Kruglak Art Gallery is closed for the fall semester as we await the opening of our brand-new gallery, which will be located within the new Media Arts Center, adjacent to the Art Department. In the meantime, the Art Department is planning fall art events. The first event will be an exciting virtual art exhibit that will be available for viewing on the Kruglak Gallery website in the fall, please watch for announcements of other art events. Through My Lens // Virtual Art Exhibit The practice of the artists in this show is diverse and runs the gamut from historic processes to experimental digital systems. “Through my Lens” features the art of Chris Ferreria, Lauren Greenwald, Aaron Pedro, and Benjamin Poarch. Ferreria works both in color and black and white. He uses both abstract and representational imagery to explore and understand the tensions between the public and private dimensions of identity formation, and perception in society. Greenwald is a visual artist working in photography and video, using a range of traditional and contemporary methods to explore landscape, perception, and the experiential. Pedro is deeply attuned to his surroundings. The ocean, in particular, is his greatest muse. Photographing the ocean at dusk, he uses long exposure techniques to emphasize the movement of waves and clouds. Through photo-compositing, blending portraiture with landscapes and seascapes, he creates photographs that evoke both emotion and conceptual art, offering a new perspective on scenic photography. Poarch uses a unique process to create his images called a tintype. A tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal. "Convergence" by Duke Windsor brings together two distinct artistic styles—textured urban abstracts and realistic alleyway scenes—to explore the raw beauty and hidden stories of city life. Through layers of paint, rich textures, and touches of gold leaf, Windsor captures the interplay between gritty urban surfaces and the vibrant experiences they reflect. His detailed alleyway paintings, inspired by thousands of photographs, contrast with expressive abstract works, revealing the unseen narratives within our built environment. Convergence invites viewers to consider the ways our cities shape us, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the ever-evolving landscapes we call home. About this Program The attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023 opened a new chapter in the turbulence history of the post-Ottoman Levant. A low-grade war between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel begun on Oct. 8, 2023 exploded in September 2024 with devastating effect on both Hezbollah and the Lebanese population and infrastructure. Shifting power balances in the Levant and beyond contributed to the unexpectedly sudden collapse of the seeming impregnable Assad regime after 14 years of civil war. To understand the outlines of any potential emerging orders in Syria and Lebanon it is crucial to understand the history and forces driving today’s fragmented, yet interrelated Levant. Michael Provence, a specialist in modern middle eastern history, will present via Zoom the broad historical context in which recent developments in Syria & Lebanon have occurred. He will discuss the late Ottoman period, the colonial & post-colonial periods in the Levant, the emergence of Israel, the rise of Assad, the fall of Lebanon into civil war, and the emergence of Hezbollah - including its role as a proxy/client of Iran. About Michael Provence Michael Provence teaches modern Middle East history, focusing on the 20th-century Arab East. He received a B.A in History from U.C. Berkeley in 1994 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2001. During 2017-2018 he was Chercheur Résident (Research Fellow in Residence), Institut d’Etudes Avancées de Nantes, France. In 2010-11 and 2014, Provence was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin, Germany. In 2024-25, he is a visiting professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is the author of two books and many articles. The books are "The Great Syrian Revolt and the Rise of Arab Nationalism" (2005) and "The Last Ottoman Generation and the Making of the Modern Middle East" (2017). Both available in Arabic and Turkish. Provence lived and studied over the course of many years in several Middle Eastern countries, particularly Syria and Lebanon, between 1998 and 2006. Learn to wet felt soap & create fun gifts! November 30, 10 a.m. - Noon Join this 2-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of transforming loose wool into felted fabric. This fiber art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. And in this class, each student will make 2 felted soaps, with an option to create more in class for an additional materials fee. What are felted soaps? A felted soap is the union of felted wool covering a bar of soap, creating a gentle exfoliating soap that’s anti-microbial and long lasting. The wool wrapped around the soap becomes a seamless piece of felt and can be embellished with interesting patterns and colors. In this class, felting artist Sylviane Collier will take you step by step through the felting process, starting with creating a color palette and design using a wide selection of dyed merino wool. Each student will make 2 felted soaps. And, if time and interests permit, additional soaps will be available to felt for $8 each (this fee can be paid in cash to the instructor). You may also purchase the supplies for the same price to continue felting soaps at home. The soaps used for this class are made with all natural ingredients, scented with essential oils and made in the U.S. For allergies or soap preference, students are welcome to bring their own soaps to wrap. No experience necessary. Ages 8+ welcome.
