Friday, September 13, 2024 from 4–6 PM Esteban Saltos (paper arts) PEEC for TEENS (13–18 years old) PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. The program is free and teens can register. Spreckels Organ Society, a non-profit organization curating concerts and performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in the heart of Balboa Park, celebrates Halloween with a special Spooktacular concert featuring Phantom of the Opera and Haunted Organ Tour. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., The Haunted Pavilion opens to the public for a kid-friendly insider tour “Meet the Great Composers Decomposing,” joined by zombies from Thriller San Diego (first-come, first-served). At 6:30 p.m., the concert begins with Spooktacular organ solos, led by Spreckels Organ Artistic Director Raul Prieto Ramírez, who is also San Diego’s Civic Organist; followed by a “Phantom of the Opera” concert with Soprano Caroline Nelms and Tenor Bernardo Bermudez. The program – free and open to the public – includes state-of-the-art spooky projections on the Pavilion by SonderEyes to provide a unique Halloween visual experience that goes with the music. The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.
