Carmen Winant is a Professor in the Department of Art at Ohio State University, where she is the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art, and an affiliated faculty member in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. Winant’s work poses a challenge to the ways that we understand women’s power, pleasure, labor, healing, and liberation to function, querying the aesthetic and political legacy of second-wave feminism. Winant’s appropriative installations and artist's books grapple with this question for all of its contradictory impulses: the awe of living in a revolutionary moment, a shared preoccupation with the female body as a zone of political strife, cognizance of the racial and class-based limitations of the second-wave movement; the mine- and not-mine nature of historical legacy. In using found photographs, Winant acts upon primary evidence (rather than indexical reference); the images incorporated into her work contend directly with the complex notion of socio-political inheritance. Winant has taught in Ohio prisons through The Ohio Prison Education Exchange Project (OPEEP) has also served as the Dean of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2013-2015); and is a 2019 Guggenheim fellow in photography. Almost 20 years ago, transcenDANCE was co-founded by 12 teens and 2 adults who sat under a tree at Hoover High School. Rooted in our strong bonds and love of dance, we dreamed of what transcenDANCE could be for ourselves, each other, and our community. As we reflect on this origin story, we have invited our current CREATE students to explore what grounds them, what nourishes them, and what dreams they want to bring to life. As we reflect on our subject we may find clarity, understanding and peace of mind. The time provides space to see with fresh eyes of why this came to pass. We will then express our discovery through color, texture and composition, in a figurative or abstract style with thread, appliqué, color and pattern. Come stitch with us. Nothing is like stitching in community with others. It’s fun, healing and grounding. Nancy will teach you the techniques and walk you through the step-by-step process to assist you with creating your work of art! Nancy’s approach is all about self-expression Please feel free to bring any fabrics or swatch of clothing that you like or has a special meaning that you would like to include in your project. All the sewing and embroidery is done by hand. It’s a slow stitch process. Prerequisites: Please be able to thread a needle, tie a knot repeatedly and make a basic running stitch. (A bonus if you can backstitch.) Materials: Students to bring: A needle or two for sewing and embroidery, embroidery thread or floss, sharp fabric scissors, any fabrics, bits of lace or clothing that has a special meaning, beads or babbles that you would like to include in your project. Instructor to bring: The instructor will provide background fabric, fabric scraps, bits and bobs, embroidery floss and threads, basic tools, samples for inspiration and stitch-sample books. *If you don’t need to use any of the instructors supplies … and you have lots of opaque and transparent fabric scraps, embroidery thread, floss and needles… as-well-as a background fabric in linen or vintage cotton approximately 18x18 you can bring and forego paying instructor for materials. Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. Enjoy a range of exciting artists and musicians in the beautiful Howard Brubeck Theatre or Performance Lab D-10. The program is presented weekly during the Fall and Spring Semesters at 1 p.m. and ends at approximately 2 p.m. Admission and Parking are FREE. Munson is the organist of the First United Methodist Church of Escondido, a Life Member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and current Dean of the Palomar Chapter of the AGO. He has concertized in Southern California, the eastern United States, and Europe. He has also given four concerts at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park as part of the weekly Sunday Concert Series there.** **Munson earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music in 1992. Since 1994, Dr. Munson has been working at Palomar College when he started accompanying ballet classes, which he still does. Currently, he teaches class and applied piano, plays for ballet, and accompanies the choirs and voice class. He has taught beginning piano, music theory, and organ.
