This engaging project will support community-created yarn bombing projects for all three organizations and is set against the backdrop of VMOTA’s upcoming exhibition, “Latine: Entretejida / Interwoven” (May 11 to October 5, 2024). Come and contribute to the creation of community art, celebrating the diverse and rich textile heritage of the San Diego / Tijuana region! We’ll provide the yarn and tools . You provide your creative magic! Don’t know how to crochet or knit? We’ll have fiber mentors to help you learn & create! We will be using acrylic yarn (so it will withstand the outdoor weather for our installations) and will have crochet hooks available, while supplies last. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.
