  • Practice your reading skills with a fluffy friend! Participants learn how to be safe around animals as they improve their reading skills. The ability to read is crucial to becoming a lifelong learner. Many students find it embarrassing or even impossible to practice reading aloud in a classroom where other students might make fun of their struggle with reading. In partnership with the San Diego Humane Society we are excited to offer some fluffy friends as eager and non-critical listeners. • "Red Light Winter" by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp is an unflinching exploration of desire, intimacy, and the fragility of human connection. The story begins with two friends - Matt, a struggling writer, and Davis, a charismatic ladies’ man - who escapes to Amsterdam for a night of hedonistic adventure. There they meet Christina, a young woman whose presence shifts the balance of their friendship and ignites a triangle of passion, betrayal, and longing. What begins as a fleeting encounter in a red-light district hotel spirals into a meditation on loneliness, obsession, and the lingering power of memory. Bold, provocative, and heartbreakingly human, "Red Light Winter" asks: what do we risk in pursuit of love? Strong Adult and Sexual Content. • Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, participants will deepen their character work and learn how to craft a compelling memoir scene complete with description, details and dialogue that will bring the written word to life. A deeper understanding of the two voices of memoir will be explored; the voice of innocence and the voice of experience. Participants will gain a strong understanding of how and when to create real, conversational dialogue and utilize flashbacks. Tools to communicate clarity of character will be taught to bring the people in the story to life for the reader. Participants will be encouraged to submit another chapter of their work for peer review. (Those following the certificate program will have 3-5 chapters written by the end of this class.) Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. Our textbook, "7 Essential Writing Tools," is available for purchase on the first day of class for $10 or on Amazon/Kindle. Note: There will be no class on March 28 (San Diego Writers Festival) or April 4 (Easter)! Please also note that you will receive your Zoom link via email 24 hours before the start of this class.
