A true rarity, Vivaldi’s recently discovered, seldom performed masterpiece is set in Mexico during the Spanish conquest that led to the end of the Aztec Empire. While this 18th century opera is a highly romanticized and naive take on the historical events of over 200 years earlier, it nevertheless is surprisingly sensitive and empathetic to the tragedy of the Aztecs as they fight for their land and the survival of their culture and people. Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. With over ten releases and a resume that includes touring with Jerry Marotta and opening for legends like Steve Hackett and Al DiMeola, Griesgraber’s set promises a diverse and compelling lead-in to the night’s headliners. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. January 8–March 5 (9 weeks, 27 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio There are few artistic pursuits more rewarding than creating a successful portrait bust, especially of a loved one or significant other. Join sculptor Marty Davis as he teaches the process of creating a bust from photos. Students will learn how to photograph a portrait sitter, and how to use those photos to create an accurate three-dimensional (3D) likeness. Marty will explain and demonstrate the elements of successful portraiture. Topics include the anatomy of the skull and neck, the proportion and placement of the features, and how to generate and refine a convincing likeness. Students will create a single portrait bust of a subject of their choosing over eight weeks. No experience with sculpture necessary. This class is for all skill levels. Materials: Materials will be discussed at the first class. Please note: this course runs for nine sessions total. Tuesdays, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. February 4–25 (4 Weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio Experience the fun in “fun-ctional” ceramics! Learn and develop your hand-building pottery skills with three projects, such as a set of nesting plates, a berry bowl, and your own custom mug. Each class will introduce a new project to work on, which will require practicing different techniques to get to the final assembled piece. The last class will be reserved for glazing all the work produced during the class. At the class's completion, you will take home your glazed projects, finished and ready to be used. Beginning to intermediate students are welcome. Materials: The materials fee includes clay, glazes, firings, and the use of basic tools. It is recommended that students bring an apron and a hand towel for cleanup, as well as a notebook and pencil to write down instructions and sketch ideas.
