Ted Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, spent his life pushing open the doors of conventional thought, ushering in new directions and ideas, and always looking “through the wrong end of the telescope.” His wife, Audrey, continued that vision as she guided Ted’s legacy across the nearly 30 years following his passing. Such stewardship included the formation of The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, allowing the world its first chance to see images Ted had made privately yet never shared with the general public. San Diego farmers and farms are the focus of "California Grown, Plein Air" exhibition at the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center May 17 – June 20, 2025. In the Spring of 2025, plein air painters from around San Diego County painted at farms, documenting the diverse types of farms in the region. Juror Katie Stokes, the editor of Edible San Diego Magazine, will select her favorite artworks during the reception, Saturday May 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. "Edible San Diego magazine has been celebrating local food in farms and gardens for 17 years. Our region's many beautiful valleys, hills, creeks, rich history and diverse plant and animal life make it a haven to grow food or enjoy the harvests of farmers, ranchers and fishers. Participants can meet at the museum at 9 a.m. to find maps and coffee for the paint-out. Artwork from the paint-out will be displayed for sale in the “wet gallery”. Artist Rose Irelan will be leading a plein air painting workshop on Friday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is required through the museum website on the exhibitions page. The series concludes on Wednesday, March 19, with the local debut of the Avishai Cohen Quartet, featuring Cohen on trumpet, Yonathan Avishai on piano, Barak Mori on bass, and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Cohen is globally recognized as a player-composer open to multiple strains of jazz and active as a leader, co-leader, and sideman. Aside from the acclaimed work with his quartet, he has also recorded and toured as part of the Mark Turner Quartet, the SFJAZZ Collective, and the 3 Cohens Sextet—with his sister, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat, and brother, saxophonist Yuval. In 2024, Cohen released his newest album, Ashes to Gold (ECM Records), a deeply introspective and richly textured exploration of life’s transitions and renewal. The album showcases Cohen’s ability to blend lyrical beauty with technical brilliance, further solidifying his reputation as an innovator in contemporary jazz. Named as Artistic Director of the International Jerusalem Festival, Cohen has also been voted as a Rising Star on three consecutive occasions in the DownBeat Critics Poll. A true rarity, Vivaldi’s recently discovered, seldom performed masterpiece is set in Mexico during the Spanish conquest that led to the end of the Aztec Empire. While this 18th century opera is a highly romanticized and naive take on the historical events of over 200 years earlier, it nevertheless is surprisingly sensitive and empathetic to the tragedy of the Aztecs as they fight for their land and the survival of their culture and people.
