  • Join us for an intimate and inspirational evening with multi-award winning author Leslie Ferguson and her book When I was her Daughter. With raw honesty, Ferguson depicts her journey through madness, loss, and a broken child-welfare system. Books will be available for purchase and signing. About the book: Seven-year-old Leslie has a serious problem. Someone is trying to kill her. She and her little brother must confront the stark reality of living with their mother’s raging psychosis. Other family members try to help, but they are no match for the unpredictability that comes with mental illness. Once in foster care, Leslie learns that life doesn't improve. . . until one simple and unexpected question changes Leslie's world forever. Leslie Ferguson enjoyed a career as a high school English teacher and college writing instructor for two decades before relocating to San Diego to pursue work in the publishing industry. Currently, Leslie sits on the Board of Directors of the International Memoir Writers Association, and she loves performing original stories and poems. As an editor and book doctor, one of Leslie’s passions is helping other writers tell their own stories with courage and emotional honesty. Her multi-award-winning debut memoir, When I Was Her Daughter, tells her story of madness, loss, and survival as a foster kid in the 1980s.

  • The ocean inspires, connects, sustains us. Artists, poets, musicians, surfers… beach-goers the world over share a deep admiration and respect for the sea. The "Poetry in Ocean: A Celebration of the Sunset, Surf and Sea" panel and open reading was born of the same gusto for sun and surf, San Diego style! The evening will start with a panel discussion led by surfer and associate publisher of the San Diego Poetry Annual, Michael Klam. Panelists are surf journalist, Scott Bass, classical pianist/surfer, Jeeyoon Kim, poet/visual artist, Ted Washington, and lifelong surfer, artist, author and contributing writer at The Surfer’s Journal, Cher Pendarvis. Open mic follows the panel. All poets and writers of any genre are invited to share their take on the influence and inspiration they draw from the sea. Open mic readers will share one poem (or two short ones) or one piece of short prose each. Writers can sign up on the night of the show or preregister to read at sdpoetryannual@gmail.com. The Friends of the San Diego Central Library will also be hosting a membership drive to support the library. Everyone who stops by their table will get an opportunity drawing ticket and be eligible to participate, no purchase necessary. Prizes include a Hank Warner custom surfboard, $100 dinner gift certificates to Bully’s East Prime Bistro Sports Bar (and ball caps and shirts from the restaurant), and assorted swag from Rocky’s Crown Pub. • Curated and led by the luxury beachfront resort's certified resident Catador Chris Simmons, the Agave Dinner Series is a collection of seaside pairings that explore the range of spirits crafted from the agave plant. The 2023 series will begin with a journey through the complex, smoky flavors of Mezcal Amarás during a five-course dinner by VAGA Chef de Cuisine Mark Enciso. Sip, savor and sway to live music – all on the open-air Oceana Terrace overlooking the sparkling Pacific. Tickets include welcome cocktails, a five-course dinner and mezcal pairings. Take-home bottles will also be available for purchase. Guests can expect to indulge in menu highlights including roasted red dragon napa cabbage with pistachio mole and chili crisp; king salmon with coconut leche de tigre, fennel and watercress; adobo brandt beef short ribs with red rice congii; and triple citrus cardamom pavlova with salted honey whip and lemon balm. Mezcal Amarás partners with a thoughtfully curated group of Maestro Mezcaleros in Oaxaca, Mexico to create a diverse collection of mezcal from 18 different types of agave. As the world's first carbon-neutral mezcal company, Mezcal Amarás honors the past through each Maestro Mezcalero's ancestral methods, yet is mindful of the future with modern sustainable growth practices and 100% natural, chemical-free fermentation. The process begins with a five-day pit-roasting ritual layering piñas with wood and river rocks, resulting in mezcals with pure, rich flavor profiles that are an adventurous departure from traditional tequila.
