About the speaker: Alex Villafuerte (he/him) is the Executive Director of Pacific Arts Movement, home of the San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF), now in its 26th year as one of the largest showcases of Asian and Asian American cinema in North America. A Filipino American executive with nearly a decade of nonprofit and community leadership, Alex has advanced cultural equity through film, coalition-building, and advocacy for underrepresented communities. Since becoming Executive Director in 2023, Alex has overseen the organization’s 25th anniversary celebrations, launched new community access programs such as free tickets for high school-aged youth and younger, and deepened partnerships across Southern California’s arts and cultural sectors. Under his leadership, Pac Arts continues to present hundreds of films annually, nurture the next generation of filmmakers through Reel Voices, and bring global stories to local audiences. Beyond Pac Arts, Alex is co-chair and a founding member of the San Diego API Coalition, convening more than 50 AA & NHPI-serving organizations to foster collaboration and capacity-building across the region. His career has included leadership roles with San Diego Pride, the Asian Business Association San Diego, and NQAPIA, where he has championed intersectional communities and amplified underrepresented voices. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Diversionary Theatre and on the Trustee Advisory Council for the San Diego Community College District. Born in Oʻahu and raised in San Diego, Alex is a proud graduate of Morse High School and San Diego State University, where he earned a B.A. in Economics. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is thrilled to announce its newest offering for young families: Creative Storytime with Ms. Katia. This new program, held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m., is designed to introduce children to the magic of storytelling while fostering an early love for music, art, and literature. Geared for ages 2–5, Creative Storytime is a free, interactive experience featuring songs and stories that celebrate creativity and imagination. After the program, families are invited to stay and explore the Athenaeum’s extraordinary children’s collection, a treasure trove of books on music and art. This collection highlights the library’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of readers and creators. About Ms. Katia Creative Storytime will be led by Katia Graham, a passionate librarian, storyteller, and advocate for literacy. Based in San Diego, Graham brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the Athenaeum. She is a member of the Freedom to Read Statement Taskforce for the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association and has served as Youth Services Librarian at La Jolla/Riford Public Library and Children’s Librarian at Coronado Public Library. Graham is the founder of Librarian on the Go, an initiative dedicated to promoting literacy and information access. She has a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Southern California, a second master’s in broadcast journalism from Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College. A former reporter, Graham honed her storytelling skills in newsrooms, including KYMA, NY1 News, and ABC World News Tonight. In addition to her other programs, she proudly leads a bilingual storytime and developed San Diego Public Library's initiative to combat the Spanish disinformation crisis. About The Exhibition: "Where Wonders Surround You" by Paul Turounet is imagined as limited edition prints and an artist's book. The work travels through the conditions and consequences of climate change and global warming in the Southern California landscape. Turounet uses images, maps, and text adapted from an advertisement for the Ethyl Corporation in Sunset magazine in August 1962. Between the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, the Ethyl Corporation published a series of advertisements themed “The Magic Circles,” to promote their gasoline addictive products. Each advertisement included color photographs and a map. The complete suggested route encouraged families to take adventures in their car. Routes of adventure encircled such destinations as Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, Chicagoland, and New England. The Magic Circle of Southern California’s route connected the Pacific Ocean beaches of Los Angeles and San Diego with the Mohave Desert, Salton Sea, and Joshua Tree Monument. A generation later, Turounet travels to the sites of the “Magic Circle of Southern California” proposed by the Ethyl Corporation’s guide. The landscape has changed. "Where Wonders Surround You" is part of a larger body of work, "Somewhere Out There, Something is Happening." Currently represented by ten titles, "Somewhere"… is a sweeping study of the physical places and psychological spaces of the contemporary American social landscape. Turounet’s practice seeks to honor the history of a place through reflection and remembrance. To journey and pause in space is as much the locus of the artwork as the pilgrimage, or even the memorial created by the photograph. Image becomes artifact, which viewers may use to access and contemplate these same emotions and spaces. The Somewhere . . . oeuvre coalesces around three main themes: natural resources, land use, as well as climate and climate change; moments in history; the relationship of place to identity and gender. About the Artist: Paul Turounet received his MFA in Photography from the Yale University School of Art in 1995. He has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and two grants from the Trans-Border Institute. He is most celebrated for work along the US-MX border (Tierra Brava, Bajo la Luna Verde, and Estamos Buscando A), which has exhibited predominantly across the southwestern United States and Mexico. Related handmade artist’s books have been recognized by the Humble Arts Foundation, Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation, and the New York Times.
