About the Artists Mandi is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and keys player drawn to soulful, genre-blending music. She thrives on collaboration—especially with fellow musicians and hip hop artists—and brings depth and energy to every project. Known for her ear for harmony, she enjoys creating and recording background vocals, and often supports others as a studio musician or music director. Offstage, she teaches middle school choir, music, and soon orchestra, helping young artists tap into their creativity. Kaylee Daugherty is a staple singer of the San Diego jazz scene as well as a singer-songwriter. She has had the privilege to play at some of Socal’s finest establishments, including Music Box, The Jazz Lounge, Dizzy’s, and the Westgate with San Diego’s best jazz musicians, including Irving Flores, Ed Kornhauser and Mikan Zlatkovich. Kaylee’s favorite part of performing is bringing joy to her audiences. Her music makes kids dance and gives older folk a sigh of nostalgia. Kaylee is personable and interactive with her audiences, and, by inviting them into her musical world, builds a sense of community within each venue. Kendrick Dial, artistically known as Mr. Lyrical Groove is a multidisciplinary artist, spoken word poet, and front man of the award-winning band The Lyrical Groove, known for blending soul, hip-hop, and thought-provoking lyricism. With experience as a Navy veteran, creative & executive coach and leadership trainer, he brings a unique blend of structure and soul to his work. His creative work fuses personal narrative with cultural commentary, using music, poetry, and performance as tools for healing and social change. As part of PST Art Weekend: San Diego & La Jolla, join Amy Cimini (Associate Professor of Music, UC San Diego) and Charissa Noble (Assistant Professor of Music, University of San Diego) for a two-day performance and workshop in Jacobs Hall that draws on the ideas of composer Pauline Oliveros. Oliveros’ "Sonic Meditations" were a series of activities and text-based scores that emphasize somatic healing through close listening. Both programs are free with RSVP, which also includes free admission to the Museum. Performance When: Saturday, November 23 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. This event offers new performances of selected "Meditations" and invites visitors into Oliveros’ practice of sonic awareness. Workshop When: Sunday, November 24 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This workshop offers a collective exploration of the histories, materials, and social concerns that shaped Pauline Oliveros’ work with the "Sonic Meditations" and other facets of her practice. Our experience will illuminate the "Meditations" through archival materials and explore connections between sound and voice with ecology, embodiment, and justice in our contemporary historical moment. Join us for a captivating evening with the Pacific Trio, featuring three distinguished masters of traditional Chinese instruments and repertoire—David Liu on zheng (a plucked zither), Celia Liu on pipa (a plucked lute), and Qi-Chao Liu on dizi (a bamboo transverse flute). Together, they bring the rich soundscape of traditional Chinese music to life, blending classical techniques and repertoire with their own unique artistry. From the delicate tones of the zheng to the vibrant melodies of the pipa and the expressive voice of the dizi, the Trio’s performance will provide a glimpse of the beauty and depth of the Chinese musical heritage. Stay after the concert for a Q&A with the artists and explore their musical journeys, instruments, and inspirations up close. About the artists: The Pacific Trio is composed of three Los Angeles-based artists, all among the finest Chinese musicians of their generation living in the United States. David Chu-Yao Liu (zheng) studied under famous zheng masters and graduated from the Taiwan National Academy of the Arts. He has performed all over the world and in 1989 founded the Zheng Hsin Chinese Zither Orchestra of Los Angeles. Celia Liu graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and worked at the National Orchestra in Beijing. She won the award for “Most Excellent Performance” at the Art Cup international competition. She was invited to perform with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded over a hundred soundtracks for movies and TV series with Warner Brothers Nickelodeon “Kung Fu Panda”. Qi-Chao Liu (dizi), musicologist, educator, and bandleader, is an accomplished performer on a wide variety of Chinese instruments. He graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Traditional and Western Music and, in 1997, was invited to attend the Asian Pacific Performance Exchange Fellowship Program through UCLA.
