This December you will have the rare opportunity to witness a living Nativity Scene, one that sings with the voices of angels and shepherds! Musica Vitale invites you to a staged performance of Laud to the Nativity by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi on 12/13 (St. Paul's Cathedral) and 12/18 (Christ Church Coronado). Although Lauda per la Natività del Signore is generally presented as a concert piece, Respighi's wife Elsa left detailed instructions for a staged production. Our director, the noted singer-actress Angelina Réaux, might not follow these to the letter, but she is excited to bring this lesser-known work to life in the form of a popular Italian tradition, the presepe vivente or living nativity scene. Our distinguished soloists--Alberto Estanol, Shepherd (Opera Tijuana), Janelle de Stefano, Mary (Professor of Music, Santa Monica College) and Lisa Parente, Angel (San Diego Opera Singing Artist)--along with the chorus of Musica Vitale and a woodwind ensemble will breathe new life into the Christmas story, as told by the imaginative and innovative Ottorino Respighi. Their debut novel, "I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself," was a NYT Editors' Choice and the winner of a LAMBDA Literary Award in Speculative Fiction. Their second novel, "A Sharp Endless Need," which is a queer, yearning coming-of-age novel about ambition, basketball, and obsession, is forthcoming from Dial Press in May 2025. Poetry: Kazim Ali was born in the United Kingdom and has lived transnationally in the United States, Canada, India, France, and the Middle East. His books encompass multiple genres, including the volumes of poetry "Inquisition," "Sky Ward," winner of the Ohioana Book Award in Poetry; "The Far Mosque," winner of Alice James Books’ New England/New York Award; "The Fortieth Day"; "All One’s Blue"; and the cross-genre texts "Bright Felon" and "Wind Instrument." His novels include the recently published "The Secret Room: A String Quartet" and among his books of essays are the hybrid memoir "Silver Road: Essays, Maps & Calligraphies" and "Fasting for Ramadan: Notes from a Spiritual Practice." He is also an accomplished translator (of Marguerite Duras, Sohrab Sepehri, Ananda Devi, Mahmoud Chokrollahi and others) and an editor of several anthologies and books of criticism. After a career in public policy and organizing, Ali taught at various colleges and universities, including Oberlin College, Davidson College, St. Mary's College of California, and Naropa University. He is currently a Professor of Literature at the University of California, San Diego. His newest books are a volume of three long poems entitled "The Voice of Sheila Chandra" and a memoir of his Canadian childhood, "Northern Light."

The Game Music of Brett Heatley, aka HeatleyBros of Los Angeles, has been a staple of the internet for over a decade. HeatleyBros crystalized the nostalgic retro game sound and his music has been heard in millions of videos totaling many billions of views. His catalog has been used in countless games, with three times charting #1 on the IOS App Store and Apple Arcade, most notably in his ongoing work for the handheld phenomenon “Retro Bowl.” HeatleyBros’ desire to continuously push the boundaries of possibility has led him to his first major collaboration with longtime friend Mikey Kettinger of Mikey’s Imaginary Friends of San Diego. Mikey’s Imaginary Friends an alternative/indie project that began in Florida in 2006. It has been featured around the USA on radio, television, films and performances that combine experiential art with music performance. Their new album ‘What This Art Is About’ is a bold take on Indie Pop and Alternative, built from exceptional songwriting of Mikey paired with the world-building imagination of HeatleyBros. Their complementary combination of skills unite in a truly original sonic experience, challenging the listener to follow their heart, make art, and build community. Early versions of their collaborative songs and its first music video for ‘Little Less Hard’ have already been heard and viewed tens of thousands of times. “Mikey has always walked his talk.
