About Justin & Melonie Grinnell MELONIE GRINNELL is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. JUSTIN GRINNELL is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua. Kaylee Daugherty is an up-and-coming singer in the San Diego jazz scene. With roots in gospel and R&B, her musical interpretations come with soul and passion. She is humbled to play with some of the best musicians around and to have played at a great variety of venues in Southern California, ranging from the lively wineries of Temecula, the intimate coffeeshops of Oak Glen, to the upscale restaurants of Laguna Beach. With a repertoire of upwards 300 songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, and in the styles of swing, blues, bossa nova, boleros and funk, Kaylee has a song for everyone. Whether in a duo, trio, or with the energy of a quartet+, Kaylee can elevate the experience of any space. Kaylee’s favorite part of performing is bringing joy to her audiences through the universal language of music. Her music makes kids dance and gives older folk a sigh of nostalgia. She is very personable and interactive with her audiences, inviting them into her musical world and building a sense of community within each venue. The ALS Association is proud to announce they have partnered with the Swish Pro-Am League, a San Diego-based basketball league consisting of professional and amateur basketball players, for an ALS Awareness Day that will take place on Sunday, July 21 at Lincoln High School in San Diego. With an appearance by retired San Diego State University Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Fisher, the ALS Association will be featured throughout the games that are set to begin at 1:30 p.m. that day. Admission to this celebration for the ALS Association is free, and the public is encouraged to attend. The Swish Pro-Am League is a 10-team, six-week summer basketball league featuring high-caliber professional and college-caliber players from top Southern California colleges, universities and high schools—including players from San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego and Point Loma. ALS Awareness Day for the Swish Pro-Am League will consist of four games, with Fisher arriving at 2 p.m. to watch the featured game that will begin at 2:45 p.m. Some notable players participating throughout the day include Billy White, Matt Bradley, Miles Byrd, Jared Coleman Jones, Pharaoh Compton and possibly Nathan Mensah, amongst others. Fisher’s son, Mark, was diagnosed with ALS in 2011 and currently serves in a basketball coaching roll at San Diego State University. “Our family is honored to support the ALS Association and we’re grateful to the Swish League for their support,” said Fisher. “Exposure about the services provided to our son, Mark, and many other families will help sustain hope and accelerate the research and development of treatments and ultimately a cure for ALS. Thanks to everyone for helping create a world without ALS.” Fisher plans on bringing placards that were used for the ALS Association men’s basketball game at San Diego State University earlier this year. Attendees can write on the placard within the framework of “I Fight ALS on behalf of …” to personalize their recognition and support. Swish games are also a showcase for agents, scouts and coaches to observe players under high-level game conditions and offer a fun afternoon of entertainment.
