About Matt Simon Matt Simon has been a science writer at Wired magazine since 2011. His focus includes biology, robotics, climate change, and microplastic pollution. Matt was the creator of Wired’s Absurd Creature of the Week column, which ran from September 2013 to March 2016. This was turned into the weekly web video series Absurd Creatures. In April 2020, it was adapted into the hit Netflix series Absurd Planet. In 2017, Matt received an Alex Award for his book, The Wasp That Brainwashed the Caterpillar: Evolution’s Most Unbelievable Solutions to Life’s Biggest Problems, which cataloged the strangest creatures on Earth. His second book, Plight of the Living Dead: What Real-Life Zombies Reveal About Our World—and Ourselves, explored the science of how parasites mind-control their hosts. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and a Master of Music Degree from San Diego State University. He has performed thousands of gigs all across the United States, but primarily slowly crawls the freeways of Southern California on the way to the next performance. He has performed in every kind of band - from classical to jazz, blue grass to punk. Jon has studied privately with the great guitar masters, Yusef Lateef, Sephane Wrembel, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was lucky enough to glean insights from both Joe Pass and Jim Hall personally. Their wisdom planted the seeds that would become the G Way, use a little to get a lot, simplify. Jon has been teaching for 20 years. Many of his students have become professional musicians themselves, but he teaches beginners and experts alike. He teaches in his private studio, at Palomar College, San Diego School of the Creative and Performing Arts, and online. So far, knock on wood, all of his students have passed their auditions, due to their hard work and Jon's no-nonsense approach to playing guitar. The San Diego French Film Festival, presented by the Alliance Française San Diego, is back for its fourth edition from June 2nd to June 5th, with a glamorous opening ceremony on June 2nd at the high-end movie theater THE LOT in the heart of La Jolla, followed by the “Festival days”, three days of screenings at the Reading Cinemas Town Square in Clairemont. The SDFFF is an opportunity for the San Diego francophone community to come together to celebrate the richness and diversity of the French language, culture, and gastronomy, and to experience the magic of cinema in all its glory. Monday, June 3rd, will be dedicated to the ocean, a central element in San Diego's lifestyle, featuring two environmental documentaries. “Humanatee”, (2023) a short film produced by Planet Froth Productions, and the feature documentary “Oceans” (2009) directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud, co-produced by Galatee Films. The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Clay Epstein, President of Film Mode Entertainment, alongside Oscar winning producer Antoine de Cazotte, co producer at Galatee Films of the movie Oceans, Ricky Rhodes (writer/director) & Jordan Henderson (producer/creative director) from Planet Froth Productions producers of Humanatee. Scientists Arnaud Le Boyer, Physical Oceanographer and Julie Dinasquet, Marine Biology Oceanographer will bring their expertise to the discussion. On Tuesday, June 4th, the evening will commence with the screening of the short film "Monochrome" (2023), directed by Cédric Prévost. This will be followed by the feature film "Omar la Fraise" (2023), directed by Elias Belkeddar, starring Reda Kateb and Benoît Magimel. The festival will draw to a close on June 5th, featuring the short film "Riad" (2023), directed by Yann Verburgh, and the feature film "Marinette" (2023). Following the screenings, there will be a casual gathering to conclude the festival on a convivial note.
