When the hyper-sleep pods malfunction, however, all four humans will have no choice but to get along with each other in cramped quarters with dwindling supplies throughout the entire seven month journey. The public is invited to meet San Diego scientists leading groundbreaking biomedical research when Scripps Research hosts its second annual Discovery Day at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. With more than a dozen hands-on science activity stations led by over 50 graduate students and scientists from different Scripps Research laboratories, visitors will see amazing demonstrations and explore topics ranging from chemistry, neuroscience, viruses and vaccines, aging research, cancer biology, the gut microbiome, and more. Science enthusiasts of all ages will find fun and engaging activities at Scripps Research Discovery Day, from building candy DNA models and tasting ice cream made using liquid nitrogen, to peering at bacteria and tiny worms through microscopes, entering the tiny universe of viruses with virtual reality goggles, and learning about the latest research into new medicines that may soon provide treatments for disease. Following on the success of the first Scripps Research Discovery Day in November 2024, which was held in part to celebrate the non-profit research institute’s 100th birthday, Scripps Research is excited to return to the Fleet and connect again with members of the community for insightful conversations and shared moments of wonder. This class meets weekly on Wednesdays, 3-4 times each month, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 9-12 years welcome! This 4-week, repeatable series is perfect for kids who love to make things! Children learn tool safety, and get acquainted with various woodworking hand tools and techniques. They learn about wood as a material, and how to properly glue, hammer nails, and use manual drills. This month-long series is full of hands-on, engaging crafts using STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). We teach hand tool skills to this age group using safe materials and practices. Each project builds on craftsmanship, dexterity and material exploration. Students will get acquainted with various woodworking tools and techniques and will be guided through a series of exercises that exercise hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and creativity. Students will make at least one fun, high-quality project to take home over the course of the series. All materials are included. Projects are changed regularly, so students can return month after month to continue to develop their skills! Drop-ins are welcome! Is your child curious about taking this class? On September 4 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Hello Mazda of San Diego is hosting a test drive event at James Madison High School as part of its Be Moved Drive Program. This program is designed to deliver substantial donations to individual schools and their unique programs through dealer-hosted test-drive events. The San Diego community ages 18+ with a valid US driver’s license are invited to ride and drive a Mazda vehicle to earn a $50 donation for James Madison High School - up to $10,000! The funds will benefit the school’s Automotive Technology Program, helping students discover what inspires them so they can do more of what moves them. Education plays a crucial role in empowering students, and this program is one way Mazda is investing in students and uplifting the community. James Madison High School focuses on preparing students for a specific trade or occupation. The students in this pathway can apply and extend concepts studied in their math and science classes to the automotive technology industry in the school’s state of the art eight bay automotive shop. The Mazda Be Moved funding will help pay stipends for student internships with their local dealers. They will also use the funds to purchase shop shirts and a series of patches for each certification that students can earn. Walk-ups are welcome, register on site during the event.
