Sarah Beckman is Executive Director of Outside The Lens (OTL), a San Diego nonprofit media arts organization that engages 2,700+ young people annually—97% from systemically marginalized communities—to build creative confidence, explore career pathways, and drive social impact through storytelling. A creative strategist and visual storyteller with 25 years of nonprofit leadership, Sarah has guided Outside The Lens from a grassroots organization into a recognized innovator in creative youth development and media literacy, partnering with institutions like The Getty Museum on Voice Out, a regional exhibition that amplifies the perspectives of young artists. Sarah’s leadership philosophy is simple: create conditions for others to thrive. Whether expanding programs like Media Makers—which serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—or securing catalyst funding for Balboa Park's Botanical Building during her tenure at Forever Balboa Park, she leads with curiosity and trust. She’s also the creative mind behind Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art and has presented at Public Lands Alliance and International Placemaking Week conferences. A Minnesota native with degrees in Journalism and Gender & Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sarah was recently named a 2025 San Diego Magazine Nonprofit Pioneer. Applicable to comedy, drama, and reality, this unique course is designed for creative aspiring writers with no prior experience—as well as those with screenwriting experience—who seek to break into television writing. Learn in an interactive environment the basics of creating, writing, and presenting your first television script for both drama and/or comedy, including how to take your idea to the next step and create a complete half-hour or one-hour television script. Beginning and professional writers are welcome. Prior screenwriting experience is not required. The course will cover: - The steps usually taken for a first-time television writer towards writing the first script (general idea, character development, style, story acts, etc.) - Structure - Character development - The importance of your first script as a calling card - How to find an agent and get your script read - Who should you be writing for - Who does what job on a television series - The outlets for new shows and new ideas - Developing your idea - The best way to write for you - The Writers’ Room - Collaboration processes - Overview of winning past and current television show scripts - Feedback on your current concepts, outline, scenes and scripts Students will be emailed several TV scripts (shooting drafts) in PDF format prior to the first-class session (and more during the course) to be read in advance if possible. We’ll also be viewing videos related to the topics throughout the course. This course will also include special guests, including WGA writers and producers working in television today. Students will get the opportunity to ask questions and get a behind-the-scenes look into how television is made, learning about the different career paths to becoming a professional television writer and what showrunners, producers, creative executives, and fellowship competitions are looking for from writers working today. Bakunawa Market is an ancestral and spiritual marketplace rooted in Filipino heritage and healing. Inspired by the Babaylan, the healers and spirit-keepers of pre-colonial Philippines, the market offers a sacred space to remember our roots, reconnect with ancestral wisdom, and restore spiritual balance. The free, two-day community event features 30+ makers, healers, and artists – from ceramists, jewelers, and visual artists to herbalists, tarot readers, energy workers, and culinary creators – whose work reflects ancestral wisdom, decolonial practices, and spiritual connection. The Bakla Collective will also be featured, showcasing Queer Filipinx creators and centering equity and representation within San Diego’s creative community. Enjoy live performances, a Sunday workshop lineup – including Intro to Mediumship, Zero-Waste Candle Making, and Yoga + Sound: Collective Healing – and Kamayan by Kujo Eats (Sunday, 5-7 p.m.). Kamayan, meaning "by hand" in Tagalog, is a traditional communal feast where guests share food with their hands, scooping rice and dishes on a table lined with banana leaves. Thoughtfully curated by elders, each dish celebrates the true flavors of our ancestors, with a special spread featuring grilled pompano, fried bangus, BBQ chicken leg quarters, beef kare kare, pork BBQ skewers, and garlic rice.
