Over the course of eight sessions, students will begin their journey into Yiddishland, exploring both the language and get a taste of its rich culture. The course begins with learning to read and write the alef-beys (alphabet). From there, students will soon be ready to read selections from Yiddish literature, sing traditional Yiddish folksongs, and practice everyday expressions. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, share their stories, and describe their personal connections to Yiddish. All learning materials will be provided by the teacher. He has studied Yiddish at University College London, and courses in Tel Aviv, Berlin and Paris. He has led Yiddish poetry courses online for Babel’s Blessing Language School and in-person workshops at the Shtetl Berlin Festival, the Maison de la Culture Yiddish and the Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK, which he also helps to organise. He teaches at the summer programme ‘Ot Azoy’ and recently completed a pedagogy fellowship at the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA). Fall Craft Camp for Preschoolers! In this Cooking & Craft Camp, preschoolers will explore craft making and corn! On the first day of this seasonal camp, kids will be practicing and honing their fine motor skills while learning to make corn cob husk boats! On the second day, kids will explore the traditional process of making masa from corn and then making handmade tortillas, which we’ll turn into a small taco party! Indigenous Peoples’ Day Craft Camp for Kids, 7-12yrs! In this half-day Craft Camp, kids will explore craft making and corn! First Nations Peoples of North America have been masters of art and craft for thousands of years. One very humble but beautiful craft is their functional arts using corn and corn husks. After corn is ripened and harvested it needs to be fully dried. To do this the husks were carefully braided to form a long strong strand. The braided strands were then hung in their dwellings for safe keeping. A side benefit is the braids are beautiful works of art that doubles as a highly nutritious food for later use. Another creative use for some of the leftover corn husks is corn husk figures. These could vary from female dolls with colorful dresses to stout men figures with traditional simple clothing. These figures could be for children’s play toys or ceremonial gatherings. This class will share techniques on how these hand made crafts come to life. Preserve Greater Golden Hill to Host “March & Roll” in South Park Family-Friendly Event Aims to Spark Conversation About Housing Policies On Sunday, September 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the 28th Street Playground in South Park, neighbors from the South Park and Golden Hill communities will gather for a “March & Roll”—an inclusive, lively, family-friendly walk-ride-and-roll event designed to bring neighbors together, raise awareness, and start conversations about how current state and local housing legislation is affecting the safety, affordability, livability, and future of San Diego’s neighborhoods. The event will begin in South Park, where participants can meet, mingle, and decorate their walking shoes, strollers, scooters, bicycles, and wagons. At noon, the group will follow a set route through the neighborhood, showcasing community spirit and solidarity while enjoying South Park’s tree-lined streets and historic charm. Organizers say the goal is not just to voice concerns but to encourage informed dialogue about how to balance growth with preserving what makes each neighborhood unique. Participants are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, sun protection, signs, and festive decorations for themselves or their wheels.
