An appellate justice in San Diego has been nominated by Gov. Gavin Newsom to serve on the California Supreme Court, which would make her the first Latina to ever serve on the state's highest court, it was announced Tuesday.

The COVID-19 pandemic has decreased the use of ordinary health care such as routine medical exams, leading to cancers being diagnosed at later stages.

The requirement will remain in place for now, pending a Feb. 28 reassessment of COVID-19 case rates and other pandemic metrics.

In a move touted as a means of increasing public trust in the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the advisory Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board will begin responding to scenes of in-custody fatalities and deputy-involved shootings that result in critical injuries or deaths.
