A new report card on the well-being of California’s children gives the state poor marks in a number of areas. The report comes from the non-profit advocacy group Children Now. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
It’s the 18th annual report card from Children Now. And it gives California a "C" overall.
The report says a variety of systemic problems are affecting California’s children. Chief among those is obesity.
Children Now president Ted Lempert says one in three kids in the state are either overweight or obese.
Lempert: And what that means for future health problems is quite severe, and really as we note in the report, threatening that this generation of this kids’ life expectancy could be lower than their parents.
Lempert says another area of concern is nearly 750,000 California children are uninsured. Governor Schwarzenegger is expected to offer a possible remedy in next week’s state of the state address.
