Guest Host - Alison St John: When I was growing up, there was a subtle undercurrent of anti-American feeling in my family, though perhaps less pervasive than in other British families because my grandmother was American. I still remember the surprise, though, that my father expressed after I moved here and got married, when he came to visit me in America and discovered he really liked the people.
Our guest in the studio is Dr Andrei Markovits of the University of Michigan, whose latest book is called Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America . Dr Marcovitz’s premise is that anti-American sentiment in Europe has gone into overdrive, not just because of President Bush's policies, but because it is an essential ingredient of forming a common unified European identity.
