Controlling the Image

There's a good post at the blog A Stitch in Haste about the recent tempest in a teapot of a photograph of presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing a native Somali outfit.

In an Associated Press article on the reported circulation of the photograph at the San Francisco Chronicle, Sen. Obama's campaign manager was quoted as calling this "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

I'm sorry? You're saying this is the most shameful and offensive fear-mongering that's taken place in this election?

Hi Chuck, First, let me say I love your tag line! I'd love to know the good cause some time... Second, the tempest in a teapot is so strange from the get go. What's more scary, what the people responsible for the photo hoped to suggest (i.e., Obama is not a Christian, he's a Muslim, and he's also loyal to anti-Americanism), or the Obama campaign's hyperbolic response? The photos and what they are meant to depict were supposed to inflame prejudice of one kind or another. But haven't both candidates thickened their political skin with these barbs? There really are more important world and local issues than chastising the opposition. It's politics as usual "from day one" unless all the candidates prioritize their indignation.

Making kids happy is always a good cause. Hope you enjoyed the photo at the link. While I thought both sides of the photo issue were ridiculous, Obama's people certainly seemed to push it over the top.
