Museums Face Rough Times

Maureen Cavanaugh : From the Mingei to the Midway, San Diego is home to more than 35 museums across the county, 15 of them in Balboa Park alone. San Diegans love visiting them, and so do tourists, who make the rounds of the museums to check out our rich and varied cultural history.
There is hardly ever a time when museums find themselves awash in money. But right now, museums, like most non-profit institutions, are finding themselves between a rock and a hard place financially.
Those that operate from endowments are finding that investment income has taken a very big hit because of the Wall Street slump. And, some museums are also seeing their grant money and attendance numbers decline. So what's a museum to do?
The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership's 2nd annual Cultural Arts Leadership Symposium is Friday, February 13, 2009, beginning at 8 am.
