Masterpiece Classic: My Boy Jack

Airs Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 10:30 p.m. on KPBS TV

Above: Daniel Radcliffe ("Harry Potter") stars as Jack — son of British literary giant Rudyard Kipling — who triggers a bitter family conflict when he joins the Irish Guard at the outset of World War I.

Cattrall on Kipling

In an exclusive interview, Cattrall talks about preparing to play Carrie Kipling, one of the most despised women of her generation, facing the potential effects of war on her own family, and growing up on Masterpiece.

In 1914 England, patriotism is high in the early days of WWI, and writer Rudyard Kipling (David Haigh, "Four Weddings and a Funeral") is one of its most eloquent and passionate voices. John "Jack," (Daniel Radcliffe, "Harry Potter" films), Kipling's only son, is underage, hopelessly myopic, and eager to join the war effort. Kipling's outspoken American wife Carrie (Kim Cattrall, "Sex and the City") remains more sanguine on the course of the war, and the fate of her family.

"My Boy Jack," based on a true story, tells of a nation at war, and offers an intimate portrait of one family's complex and divided experience in it.
