Local Event: ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’

Want Some Din-Din Now?

Above: Joan Crawford and Bette Davis star in the 1962 Robert Aldrich film "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

If you have never seen the 1962 film "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" (playing tonight only at 7pm at the Birch North Park Theater) now is your chance!

Nicole Kidman can take off her make up in "Rabbit Hole" and pretend she's acting in order to get the Academy's attention at Oscar time. But when Hollywood legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford took off their glamorous visages they really delivered a shocker! "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" is one of those 1960s Gothic horror films featuring Hollywood legends. You could also find Bette Davis and Olivia DeHavilland in "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." These films were over the top grotesqueries that were absolutely riveting and entertaining... in a darkly comic way.

"Baby Jane" is a claustrophobic, psychological thriller about an aging ex-vaudeville child star (Davis) waging a reign of terror over her crippled ex-movie star sister (Crawford). The film revitalized the careers of both stars as it delivered unexpected shocks from these once regal ladies of Hollywood. Director Aldrich makes excellent use of his confined setting and gets the best from his stars.

Davis won her 10th Academy Award nomination for her macabre portrayal of Baby Jane. This is a must see! Thanks to FilmOut for sponsoring the screening.

Companion viewing: "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte," "The Snake Pit," "The Nanny," "Berserk"

She should shine Helen Mirren's shoes. As for Davis-Crawford--their performances were legendary! San Diego's Victor Buono was also outrageous in his own way and deserved a supporting nom! (Have you ever seen the trailer with director Aldrich? he looks like a tourist!)

Kidman can be used well by directors. I thought she was perfect in Gus Van Sant's To Die For. But Davis was phenomenal in Baby Jane. Dare I say she had balls to let herself look so bad and then have such lovely images of herself from her early days put up for a striking contrast. I forgot how great that film was.

Don't think I saw the trailer you mentioned and I had forgotten about Buono's SD connection.

Thanks!
