There is great music to be heard and entertaining plays to be seen in San Diego this weekend.

There is great music to be heard and entertaining plays to be seen in San Diego this weekend.

One of those plays is at the Ion Theatre. The Mystery Plays is described as ‘two intertwined spine-tingling one-acts’ that are a mix of Hitchcock, H.P. Lovecraft and The Twilight Zone. This play opens the theatre’s 7th season and they’ve gotten a play written by, in-demand writer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The Mystery Plays production is at the Ion Theatre through September 15.

The Dave Matthews Band is back in San Diego with another great concert. This concert happens just four days before the release of their new album Away From the World. Opening for one of the hardest –working touring bands, is Allen Stone. The Dave Matthews Band at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, this Friday, September 7 at 7:30pm.

Steve Martin’s adapted play, The Underpants, makes its San Diego premiere this Saturday, September 8 at the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach. This comic farce, originally written by the playwright Carl Sternheim back in the early 1900’s, has been “re-invigorated” by the multi-talented Martin for modern audiences. In Martin’s words, “One's own inherent presence in the current age intrudes….I chose not to present the play as historical artifact. I decided to uncork the genie that Sternheim had placed in the bottle--the genie that makes the play relevant to our age…” If you need a good laugh, this is the play to see.

The L.A. Piano Wizard and Composer, Mike Garson will perform in The BackRoom performance space of 98 Bottles on Saturday, September 8 at 8pm. Garson will be accompanied by Lori Bell on flute, Dave Curtis playing bass, Kevin Koch on drums, and special guest Theo playing bass.

Dale Morris’ W.C. Fields by Himself! Starts Saturday, September 8 at the 10th Avenue Theatre in downtown San Diego. A year-long odyssey in the making, Dale Morris both playwright and actor, has labored over the creation of this play and San Diegans will be the first to see it, before it moves on to L.A.

Anthology and 102.1 KPRI Present the summer’s Second StreetBeat Festival, this Saturday at 3pm in Little Italy. Some of the featured bands include The Wallflowers, Tristan Prettyman, & Walk The Moon. If you want to enjoy one of San Diego’s most popular neighborhoods, while listening to great music, mingling with fun people and eating some of the best food in our area, then this is the place to go. There’s also an after-party scheduled at Anthology at 10pm to keep the night going with Lady Dottie and The Diamonds.

Plays, music or both – Whatever you decide to do this weekend – Enjoy!
