No Blue Angels For Miramar Air Show (+Video)

Blue Angels At Miramar 2012

The Navy announced today it has cancelled all remaining Blue Angels performances for the rest of 2013 due to sequestration cuts - and that includes the Miramar Air Show.

According to a Naval Air Forces news release:

Recognizing budget realities, current Defense policy states that outreach events can only be supported with local assets at no cost to the government.

This is one of many steps the Navy is taking to ensure resources are in place to support forces operating forward now and those training to relieve them.

The Blue Angels are a major draw for the Miramar Air Show, as the website for the show attests. (See screen shot at left.) As of this morning, the homepage was still advertising the Blue Angels for the upcoming October 2013 show.

The Blue Angels squadron will continue to practice at its home station in Pensacola, Florida.

Truly an unnecessary expense. I have no problem with the air show itself as it draws over 100K people per year, so there is obviously a demand. Just simply figure out how much admission to charge each person to cover the cost. They will find out right away how much in attendance they get when people have to pay for it.

We need that space for an airport. Miraramar should be moved and combined with Camp Pendleton. I know the haters will come out and throw stones at me, but come on, this base can't stay there forever.
San Diego is growing and it's becoming increasingly dangerous/inconvenient to have a base located there.

This is great! More bloat and waste eliminated by sequestration!

I completely agree that Miramar is the perfect location for a civilian airport. In fact, most bases around the country could easily be consolidated to save money.

For instance, It is ridiculous to train Marines sandwiched between an airport and a freeway such as at MCRD San Diego. All training should be done in a single, rural location like MCRD Parris Island.
