Undocumented Writer’s New Film Screens At San Diego Asian Film Festival

Evening Edition

Aired 11/14/13 on KPBS Midday Edition.

GUEST

Jose Antonio Vargas, Filmmaker, 'Documented'

Transcript

Two years ago, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas first went public with his personal story about being born in the Philippines and living in the United States illegally.

He was a guest on this show back in 2011, after his essay came out in The New York Times.

Since that time, he's been an activist in support of people living in the U.S. without documentation.

Jose Vargas has now made a documentary about what it's like to be an American without having the papers to prove it.

"Documented" is currently featured at the 14th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival.

He's not American. Period. Stop changing definitions based on your own story.

He is disrespecting every legal immigrant in America and laughing at their difficult and long path to become citizens.

He is not an American and never will be. He doesn't have the honor, respect, or common decency to be a citizen.

He's the worst example of an immigrant: One who believes the law doesn't apply to him.

No, because EVERY person has their own individual story. What was the case for him is not the case the next person. Wasn't he brought here as a child? Extenuating circumstances exist. The law is inadequate and fails to address this. That, on top of socio-economic push-pull factors.

Attend one of the screenings.

Gays and illegals, my two favorite things.

Why hasn't this guy been deported yet?

Missionfailed,

No he isn't an American? I'm glad we finally agree.

Every person does have their own story and reason for committing crimes. Boredom, fun, desperation, spite, greed, etc. But they're all wrong.

This illegal alien could easily return to his home country and apply for US citizenship like millions have, millions are, and millions will. He is not above the law or above the other millions of people waiting in line.

I just hope there are ICE agents present at the Asian Film Festival who are prepared to do the duty that we Americans have paid them to do. If his flagrant offense is ignored that sets a clear precedent for ignoring ALL federal laws.

CaliforniaDefender I am glad there are still people around here that care about this country more than they care about being politically correct.

@ca offender, not talking to an immigration is a CIVIL offense. How many times does one have to repeat this??? But if you're that adamant about it, you should have called the CHP hotline and had him arrested last Friday at the screening. You missed your opportinity. PS: Not do I think you'll be attending the Arab-American Film Festival either! lol

JOHN MARK, yes those are your boogeymen, not they they have anything in common, but they are your boogeymen. At least you are honest about unlike others on this thread who feign "civility."

Missionaccomplished it is true, I do not try to pretend I am civil. I only speak the truth, the clear logical truth. Usually, this is very offensive to people on the left side of issues.
