An Amtrak train struck a commercial truck in Sorrento Valley on Thursday, injuring at least three people and postponing some late-afternoon rail runs through the coastal area.
The northbound locomotive struck the big rig at Sorrento Valley Road and Sorrento Valley Boulevard just after 3 p.m., knocking it off the tracks and sending it toppling onto its side, according to San Diego police.
The impact also apparently sent the delivery truck crashing into at least one other vehicle alongside the tracks. Medics tended to two drivers at the scene before taking them to a Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, said Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The train engineer was taken to a hospital for evaluation. No Amtrak passengers reported injuries, Luque said.
Rail service through the area was on hold for a time due to the crash.
By late afternoon, Coaster passenger-train runs were resuming, using a track bypassing the one involved in the crash.
Police closed traffic lanes in the immediate area to allow for investigation and cleanup and advised motorists to use alternate routes, if possible.
It was unclear why the truck was on the tracks.
